CCSS IS HEADING TO THE BRISBANE DISABILITY EXPO!

We’re excited to announce that CCSS will be at the Brisbane Disability Expo this month!

Today is R U OK? Day

A meaningful conversation can make a real difference. Take a moment to check in with your family, friends, colleagues or someone you support not only today, but whenever you notice they may be struggling.

Ask, “Are you OK?”, listen without judgement, encourage action and continue checking in. You don’t need to have all the answers; sometimes simply being present and listening is enough.

NDIS TIP OF THE WEEK

This week, we’re talking about something that comes up every day in disability support: Choice & Control, Dignity of Risk, Duty of Care and Informed Decision-Making.

They might sound like formal terms, but the idea behind them is pretty simple.

People have the right to make decisions about their own lives, including decisions that others might not necessarily agree with.

Choice & Control
Having a disability doesn’t mean losing the right to choose. Where you go, what you eat, how you spend your time and what you want to work towards are your decisions.

Dignity of Risk
Sometimes trying something new comes with risk. Taking reasonable risks is a normal part of life and can be an important part of building confidence, skills and independence.

Duty of Care
Support workers and providers still have a responsibility to recognise risks and take reasonable steps to keep people safe. Duty of care isn’t about taking over someone’s decisions, it’s about providing support safely and appropriately.

Informed Decision-Making
Good support means making sure someone has the information they need to understand their options, including possible risks and consequences, so they can make their own informed choice.

The important part is finding the balance.

Supporting someone isn’t about making every decision for them or removing every possible risk. It’s about helping people understand their options, manage risks and have as much choice and control over their own lives as possible.

And really, isn’t that something we all value. What does having choice and control mean to you?

NDIS TIP OF THE WEEK

This week’s tip is all about GOALS

When we hear the word “goal”, it can sound like it needs to be something big or life-changing. It doesn’t.

A goal can be short-term or long-term. It could be:

- Learning to cook a few meals independently
- Building confidence using public transport
- Saving for something special
- Getting out and meeting new people
- Trying a new hobby or activity
- Working towards study, volunteering or employment

So why are goals important in the NDIS?

The NDIS looks at your goals when considering what supports may help you build skills, increase independence and participate in everyday life.

Your goals don’t automatically guarantee that a particular support will be funded. The NDIA still considers whether a support meets the NDIS funding criteria. But having clear goals can help show what you’re working towards and why certain supports may be relevant to your plan.

If you’re ever stuck when someone asks, “What are your goals?”, think about your everyday life.

What would you like to do more independently?
What would you like to learn?
Is there something you’d like more confidence doing?
Is there somewhere you’d like to go or something you’d like to try?

And goal setting isn’t just for people on the NDIS, we all have goals!

Choice and control and independence mean different things to different people.

Here at Connecting Care, we believe it starts with something pretty simple. Listening.

Listening to what someone wants, what’s important to them and how they want to be supported.

Independence doesn’t mean having to do everything on your own. Sometimes it’s having the right person beside you, giving you the confidence and support to make your own decisions and do the things that matter to you. For us, that’s what good support should look like.

What a week it’s been at the Ekka!

With the Ekka wrapping up this weekend, we hope everyone who made it along had an amazing time enjoying the rides, showbags, entertainment, animals and, of course, a strawberry sundae or two!

It’s been fantastic seeing Brisbane come alive for one of Queensland’s biggest celebrations.

If you’re heading in for the final weekend, have a great time and enjoy everything the Ekka has to offer!

We've been overwhelmed by the positive feedback from our participants, and we couldn't be more grateful.

Every response in this survey represents a real person whose life we've had the privilege to be part of. Reading comments about feeling safe, supported, understood, and genuinely cared for reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.

To our incredible support workers and office team, thank you for the compassion, professionalism, and dedication you bring every single day. Your commitment is reflected in the experiences our participants have shared, and you should all be incredibly proud of the difference you're making.

This NAIDOC Week, Connecting Care proudly celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the strength, resilience and rich cultures of the world's oldest continuing cultures. It is also a reminder of the importance of respect, inclusion and working together to build communities where everyone feels valued and connected.

At CCSS we are committed to providing person-centred supports that respect each person's identity, culture and choices. We believe culturally safe and respectful support plays an important role in helping people achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives.

As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, we encourage everyone to take the opportunity to learn about the stories, traditions and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, not just this week, but throughout the year.
