🌏 Happy World Environment Day! 🌿

We’re lucky to live in a region filled with incredible wetlands, coastlines, bushland and wildlife. Every native seedling planted, pollinator welcomed, and patch of habitat restored helps keep these special places thriving.

Today is a great excuse to get outside, enjoy nature, and appreciate the landscapes that make the Fleurieu and Lower Lakes such a wonderful place to call home.

💚 Where's your favourite local spot to connect with nature?

🌿 Rockleigh Biodiversity Workshop Wrap Up 🌿

On a cool autumn morning last week, local landholders gathered at the Rockleigh Old School House, welcomed by a warm fire and a shared passion for restoring biodiversity across the landscape.

The workshop brought together participants involved in our Mulgundawa to Tungkillo Biodiversity Links project for a day of learning, discussion, and connection focused on revegetation and habitat restoration. 🌱

Throughout the day we explored:
• Revegetation basics - where to start, what to look for, and who to talk to
• Tree guards and the pros and cons of different approaches
• Other methods for protecting young plantings
• The important relationship between flora and fauna
One of the highlights of the day was a field walk at Bushland Conservation, where participants were able to see established revegetation exclosures firsthand (pictured) and learn from many years of local experience and knowledge in the area.

It was also fantastic to see landholders connecting with one another, sharing stories, challenges, and insights from their own revegetation journeys.

A huge thank you to Phil from Barron Environmental for delivering such an informative and entertaining workshop, and to everyone who joined us for the day. 🍂

This workshop is part of the Mulgundawa to Tungkillo Biodiversity Links project, supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.

River mint tea, saltbush scones, and quandong and apple crumble with cinnamon myrtle custard…

No, we weren’t at a fancy native food café - this was just the beginning of our latest workshop in Mount Barker, where participants gathered over the weekend to learn all about native foods and teas.

It was a feast for the senses, featuring a range of local native foods alongside flavours from further afield. Participants enjoyed creating their own tasting platters while discovering just how easy it can be to incorporate native ingredients into everyday recipes.

Choosing from a variety of teas with different health benefits, everyone also created their own custom native tea blend to take home - which was a big hit.

A huge thank you to Cate from Kaiyu Superfoods Leanne and Sanjay from Cultural Plant Uses, and Shanna from Inchim AnyAny for sharing their incredible food, knowledge and passion, and to the Mount Barker Community Library for hosting us.

We recently hosted some of our project partners at one of our grassy woodland revegetation sites in Callington. The visit showcased the impressive scale of plantings achieved over the past few years and featured valuable insights from experts across the ReBird the Ranges alliance on a range of grassy woodland revegetation methods.

Since 2023, we have planted, watered and guarded 10,000 seedlings across 100 hectares of contiguous land spanning Adelaide Hills 4WD and the adjoining Mock property in the Adelaide Hills. Canopy tree seedlings have been planted at low densities, with wide spacing designed to replicate the open structure of grassy woodlands, supporting species like the Diamond Firetail (EPBC-listed Vulnerable).

Thank you to everyone who came along, and especially to the landholders, Glenda and Robert Mock, and Adelaide Hills 4WD for their ongoing support. Glenda and Robert have contributed their own time and resources to remove temporary guards, install heavy-duty wire mesh guards and undertake pest animal control. Adelaide Hills 4WD has undertaken w**d control across the property and will remove temporary guards as needed.

This work has been supported by funding from the Landscapes Priorities Fund and State Government.

Today ends Volunteer Week, where we acknowledge the incredible work volunteers everywhere contribute to our community. The theme this year is ‘Your Year to Volunteer’…so if you have been thinking about getting involved now is the perfect time!

A huge thank you to our wonderful community nursery volunteers! Rain, hail and shine, week after week you show up with dedication, skills and a good dose of humour.

This year the nursery volunteers have helped to propagate and care for an incredible 140,000 native seedlings…we couldn’t do it without you! 🌱💚

🐢 This World Turtle Day, we’re saying thanks.

💚Thanks to our local turtles for quietly cleaning our waterways.
💚Thanks to the carers and volunteers who watch over nests, rescue injured turtles and protect our native species.
If you see a turtle in the wild, help protect it by reporting sightings to TurtleSAT.
💚 Say thanks by learning more about your local turtles and by checking out the new book Mystery of the Missing Turtles – a great read for curious minds.
💚And if you’re lucky enough to have a pet turtle, say thanks to them too! 🧡
Remember: turtles live a long time, and they can’t be released into the wild, rivers or lakes – planning for their lifelong care matters.
🙌🏽Turtles thrive when communities care.

🌿 Backyards for Biodiversity… growing community, together 🌿

Over the past 12 weeks, 30 south coast locals have come together to connect with nature - and each other- through our Backyards for Biodiversity series. 🌱

From learning about birds, butterflies and bees, to discovering how even the smallest spaces can support nature, each session has been about nurturing habitat at home and strengthening our connection to the natural world. 🐦🦋🐝

We celebrated the final workshop by sharing local native plant packs, ready to be planted out into backyards across the region - small actions that, together, create a bigger impact for biodiversity. Thank you to Ben and the volunteers at Alexandrina Community Nursery for propagating and caring for the plants, and to Cittaslow for bringing some extra plants on the night.
Led by Hannah from .co the series was met with wonderful feedback, receiving a 100% “Excellent” rating, with every participant saying they would recommend it to a friend. 🙌

What really grew over the program was a sense of community. People sharing knowledge, stories and a genuine care for creating spaces where nature can thrive. 💚
And this is just the beginning. With more workshops, native plant packs and opportunities to get involved this year, we look forward to continuing to grow this community of people caring for nature - right at home. 🌼

This project is a collaboration between Alexandrina Council and Second Nature, funded by Alexandrina Council and Green Adelaide.

🌿 Boosting Backyard Biodiversity in Mount Barker 🌿

It was wonderful to see so many locals collecting their Mount Barker Wildlife Gardening plant packs on Saturday, with all 200 subsidised packs finding new homes across the district.

From small gardens to larger backyards, every planting helps create habitat, support local wildlife, and bring more biodiversity into our community. 🐝🦋🐦
It was a busy morning at the nursery, with staff and volunteers chatting with residents about the locally native species included in the packs and sharing tips on planting and caring for the seedlings.

The Mount Barker Wildlife Gardening program is a long-running partnership with Mount Barker District Council, focused on encouraging wildlife-friendly gardens and increasing the use of local native plants throughout the region.

Missed out this year? You can still start planting local natives at home. The community nursery is open Thursdays from 9am–4pm at 100 Springs Road, Mount Barker, with a fantastic range of species available. 🌱
