A busy day for our crew! 🚒

Our members have had a busy day so far, beginning this morning with support for Zeehan Fire Brigade at a vegetation fire in Granville Harbour.

Not long after returning to the station, our crew was called out again to a motor vehicle rollover just outside of town.

Last night, a couple of our members also joined fellow West Coast brigades and Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) officials for the annual pre-season briefing, helping ensure we are prepared for the upcoming fire season.

We are always looking for new members to join our brigade!

To continue providing a reliable response across our primary and secondary support areas, we need more people willing to step up and get involved, particularly during the daytime.

Our brigade has a relatively young membership, with many of our members balancing full-time employment and family commitments alongside their volunteer duties. Additional members would make a real difference to our ability to respond when the community needs us most.

Please be aware of tomorrow (Monday 19th October) heightened fire danger levels for our region.

With warmer temperatures, high drought factor, low humidity & strong north easterly wind, our fire danger rating is high.

If there is any signs of fire please call 000 to get our brigade and supporting brigades on scene as quick as possible.

Firefighters are urging residents, particularly in rural communities, to check for fire threats posed by vermin nests in vehicles.

Tasmania Fire Service recently attended a fire at a Latrobe-area property in which a tractor sustained significant damage, after a nest built in the engine bay caught fire.

There have been other callouts to fires involving farm equipment and vehicles, with nests built by birds or rodents catching alight once the vehicle has started.

TFS District Officer Jaron Oosterloo encouraged drivers and vehicle owners to check vehicles for vermin nests that could become a fire hazard.

“It is a problem that we see at different times of the year, and particularly if vehicles have been unused for a while or sitting idle,” District Officer Oosterloo said.

“Vermin such as rats and mice, or birds, like to get into the engine or exhaust area of the vehicle, where it’s warm and dry, and make their nests.

“These nests are often built out of grass, twigs, or paper and those types of materials that can be highly flammable. Nests can catch fire quickly the next time the vehicle is started.”

District Officer Oosterloo said people were often unsuspecting of the fire threat, so it was timely to do a quick maintenance check. Vermin can also be responsible for unexpected electrical faults caused by damaged or chewed wires.

Our crew along with TFS bushfire risk unit, STT, TAS Networks & traffic control are currently briefing the planned burn north of Strahan.

Crews will move towards and start ignition at approximately 11:00am - 6pm tonight

Training on Monday night consisted of re familiarisation of our towns marine assets and dangers.

Our crew started the evening with donning our PFDs, where we must wear if we are within 2 meters of waters edge on land, or on a jetty.

We then took a drive and assessed each areas main risks and developed plans to isolate power and how difficult it can be to get water onto the fire and also mains water into our appliances to increase pumping capacity.

Fire fighter Nic Parton also jumped into the drivers seat of our 3.1, heavy tanker as he continues to work towards his truck license. It wasn’t just a drive around town, we did multiple hill starts, tight navigation around corners and round abouts to continue Nics development .

Over the weekend crews from Strahan, Zeehan & Queenstown volunteer fire brigades spent multiple hours throughout the day and night supporting Sustainable Timbers Tasmania & Parks and Wildlife at a vegetation fire north of Granville Harbour.

Using multiple fire ground techniques and with assistance from helicopters and heavy machinery we were able to slow and shift the direction of this fire 🔥

By Sunday night we were all worn out, especially Nick, Scotty, Mark & Kyron who doubled up and worked Saturday & Sunday 🚒

A Total Fire Ban has been declared for Southern Region from 2am, Wednesday 4 February until 2am, Thursday 5 February.

A suspension in the issuing of fire permits is in place in the Northern Region from 2am, Wednesday 4 February to 2am, Saturday 7 February.

During the total fire ban period:
❌ No fires are permitted in the open, including:
❌ incinerators
❌ burn-offs
❌ campfires and fire pots
❌ wood-fuelled barbecues

❗Restrictions apply to:
🔴 Welding, grinding, charring, soldering or gas cutting outdoor must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Hot Work Guideline
🔴 Harvesting, slashing or other outdoor machinery must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Machinery Operations Guideline.
🔴 Forestry Operations must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Forest Operations Guideline
🔴 Commercial outdoor cooking or catering activities must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Outdoor Oven Guideline
