Training on Monday night consisted of re familiarisation of our towns marine assets and dangers.

Our crew started the evening with donning our PFDs, where we must wear if we are within 2 meters of waters edge on land, or on a jetty.

We then took a drive and assessed each areas main risks and developed plans to isolate power and how difficult it can be to get water onto the fire and also mains water into our appliances to increase pumping capacity.

Fire fighter Nic Parton also jumped into the drivers seat of our 3.1, heavy tanker as he continues to work towards his truck license. It wasn’t just a drive around town, we did multiple hill starts, tight navigation around corners and round abouts to continue Nics development .

Over the weekend crews from Strahan, Zeehan & Queenstown volunteer fire brigades spent multiple hours throughout the day and night supporting Sustainable Timbers Tasmania & Parks and Wildlife at a vegetation fire north of Granville Harbour.

Using multiple fire ground techniques and with assistance from helicopters and heavy machinery we were able to slow and shift the direction of this fire 🔥

By Sunday night we were all worn out, especially Nick, Scotty, Mark & Kyron who doubled up and worked Saturday & Sunday 🚒

On Monday night our brigade held our fortnightly training session.

We started the night off with our monthly BA checks, BA operation and how to use our tag board for our non BA wearing members

We then headed outside to use our new 18V tools that we purchased through a grant. We used our recipro and 5 inch angle grinder to cut an access triangle in sheet metal, cutting latches on car bonnets and doors.

Thanks for everyone attending, next fortnight we will be putting these skills into practice with scene scenario drills 🔥

🔥 Planned Burn - Strahan

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service are intending to complete a planned burn for this Autumn within the Ocean Beach Conservation Area, Crown Land, Southwest Conservation Area and adjoining public reserve.

This burn aims to reduce bushfire risk to help protect lives, assets and communities.

The burn is likely to take 2 to 4 days to complete, and smoke may persist some days afterward depending on wind conditions.

❗ During burning operations public access to this area will be restricted. Stay away from the burn site until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails.

Yesterday afternoon our volunteers responded to a power pole fire near the corner of Herbert St & Innes St E, Strahan.

Due to not being able to confirm isolation of power we made the scene safe while TAS Networks assessed the damaged.

Thanks for our brigade members, TAS Networks and the public for allowing us to do our job. 🚒

Fire Juniors & Cadets Are Back

Tonight marked our first session back for the year with our amazing Juniors and Cadets.

We kicked things off with a quick recap, got hands-on practicing with radios, and even put our skills to the test with navigation in a blacked-out room — always a favourite challenge!

We train most fortnights during the school term, on Mondays from 4:30pm – 6:00pm.

If your child is already 10 (or turning 10 soon) and is interested in joining, we’d love to hear from you. Send us a message and we’ll happily provide more information.

A Total Fire Ban has been declared for Southern Region from 2am, Wednesday 4 February until 2am, Thursday 5 February.

A suspension in the issuing of fire permits is in place in the Northern Region from 2am, Wednesday 4 February to 2am, Saturday 7 February.

During the total fire ban period:
❌ No fires are permitted in the open, including:
❌ incinerators
❌ burn-offs
❌ campfires and fire pots
❌ wood-fuelled barbecues

❗Restrictions apply to:
🔴 Welding, grinding, charring, soldering or gas cutting outdoor must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Hot Work Guideline
🔴 Harvesting, slashing or other outdoor machinery must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Machinery Operations Guideline.
🔴 Forestry Operations must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Forest Operations Guideline
🔴 Commercial outdoor cooking or catering activities must comply with the Tasmania Fire Service Outdoor Oven Guideline

Yesterday afternoon at 3:30pm our brigade along with Zeehan, Queenstown, STT & Parks & Wildlife were alerted to a vegetation fire at the Henty sand dunes, 15 minutes north of Strahan via a PWS camera.

3 waterboming helicopters, 7 TFS vehicles and 1 PWS vehicle attended this fire which was in extremely difficult country to access and required a lot of teamwork, communication, mapbook skills and local knowledge from all parties to extinguish. 🚒

Everyone returned home to their stations at approximately 9:15pm to make up gear and get ready for our next call out.
