Part 2 – Outback to Ocean trip: Rockhampton, Woorabinda and Woppa

After all our successful events in Longreach, Winton, Ilfracombe and Barcaldine, Diana hopped on the bus to Rockhampton to meet with the next CoralWatch team including local Ambassadors, ready to deliver events in Woorabinda, Rockhampton and Woppa.

On Thursday we drove out to Woorabinda, an Indigenous school. We delivered two workshops, the children loved the Virtual Reality and all the coral reef learning activities, which turned out to be great preparation for their fieldtrip later in the year to North Keppel Island.

On Friday we were on stage at the Rockhampton Agricultural Show together with Capricorn Conservation Council. We educated over 200 primary school kids about coral and the importance of reefs in 2 sessions. Students got the opportunity to learn about citizen science, and created action posters to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

Our final day of our Outback trip was at the Ocean, at Woppa. Unfortunately due to weather we had to cancel our snorkel event, but we had a wonderful day of learning, sharing and connecting on Woppaburra Land and Sea Country. A huge thank you to Woppaburra Traditional Custodians and Elders for generously sharing cultural knowledge, stories and perspectives on caring for our reefs and marine environment. Special thanks to Woppaburra TUMRA Aboriginal Corporation Woppaburra Saltwater Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC Capricorn Conservation Council Keppel Dive & Snorkel Livingstone Shire Council and everyone coming to be part of this wonderful event.

In total: CoralWatch Outback to Ocean trip delivered 11 events in 9 days in 8 locations, with the help of 9 Ambassadors, 3 CoralWatch staff members and visiting scientist Professor Gregg Webb. Total outreach > 555 people. In addition, end of May we had a display at World Science Festival in Toowoomba with over 2000 visitors. What an experience and privilege to talk to so many people about what we love and care for.

The Outback to Ocean roadshow is underway! 🚗🌊

So far we’ve visited Winton Show Day, Barcaldine State School, the Barcaldine Country Women’s Association, Longreach Country Universities Centre, and Ilfracombe State School.

Across each stop we’ve been sharing presentations and interactive learning activities, exploring the story of reefs from past to present and the connections between inland Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.

We’ve been exploring fossil reefs with Professor Gregg Webb, and learning what they tell us about ancient reef systems and long-term environmental change. With Dr Anita Milroy, we’ve also launched CONNECTED an art–science project that will build a crochet coral reef, bringing together people and place.

Over the next three days we’ll be visiting Woorabinda and attending the Rockhampton Show, before wrapping up the tour on Saturday with our community citizen science event at Woppa (Great Keppel Island) alongside our Yeppoon Youth Ambassadors and the Woppaburra Land and Sea Rangers.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us so far and taken part in the conversations and activities. 🪸

April 2026 by the numbers:

Citizen scientists across multiple countries got out there and surveyed the reefs in their own backyards. Every data point collected helps us better understand coral health on a global scale and it all starts with people like you.

It’s always inspiring to see so many communities caring for their local reefs, from tropical coastlines to island communities and beyond. 🌊🐠

May 14–17 2026, the second CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop in Taiwan completed with excellent success, thanks to all participants, assistants and supporters!

The workshop brought together a total of 25 participants from Taiwan and several other countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, the United States, and Finland. Participants represented diverse professional sectors, including marine science, environmental education, diving instruction, museums, government agencies, and environmental organizations.

The four-day workshop at Manzhou Junior High School, followed the Australian Ambassador model with combined classroom lectures and field-based marine exercises. Participants received specialized instruction in coral reef ecology, climate change impacts on marine ecosystems, standardized coral health monitoring methodologies, scientific data interpretation, and citizen science applications. Snorkel activities conducted in the waters surrounding the Hengchun Peninsula provided hands-on experience in reef assessment and underwater monitoring techniques using internationally standardized CoralWatch methods.

Thanks, Wensung for bringing CoralWatch to Taiwan in 2018. Thanks, Lishu Chen for becoming an Ambassador in 2023 in Australia, your passion, and commitment is outstanding and has led to an enormous uptake of the CoralWatch program in Taiwan. A big thank you to all 2024 Ambassadors for assisting and inspiring our new Ambassadors during this workshop. Thanks 2026 Ambassadors for coming to this workshop, your passion and ideas are inspiring, please keep up the good work you do. The ocean needs you – together we can make a difference!
