As part of this year, we hosted our first WHISE RAP Book Club and invited staff to take part. The book chosen for NRW2026 was Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams) by Anita Heiss.

Designed to create space for truth-listening, reflection and conversation as a team, the book club session was a practical learning activity that was deeply valued by all staff who participated. Here are some of the reflections that came from the session.

We encourage you to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture through books. Check out these book reviews: https://www.greaterdandenong.vic.gov.au/blog/subject/1105

The theme for this year’s National is From Sorry to Action. The call is clear, we must move from words to action, and this needs to happen now, not in another decade.
Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.

We encourage you to mark National Sorry Day on 26 May, and to stand with First Nations communities to ensure this day is part of an ongoing commitment to truth-telling and healing. Find out why it’s so important that sorry is back by action: https://healingfoundation.org.au/stolen-generations/national-sorry-day/

On 27 May – 3 June, Australia celebrates .

The theme for 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

This National Reconciliation Week, WHISE encourages colleagues, community, and partners to learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and ask ourselves, ‘how can I contribute meaningfully to reconciliation?’ For more info: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week/

Kicking the day off in Naarm at Women Deliver 2026, hearing from women and gender diverse leaders on what inclusive leadership really looks like.

Across the panel, we heard that leadership isn’t about position. It’s about connection, consistency, and showing up for community.

We need to recognise the leadership of people navigating systems not built for them. Grassroots leadership is often quiet, informal, and deeply relational. It exists in communities every day, creating safety, connection, and support. And it must be recognised, valued and resourced.

Thank you to the panel for such an energising and important conversation, and for reminding us that lived experience is expertise, and that matriarchs, community leaders, and diverse voices deserve a seat at every table.
