Christ is Risen! 🌿

On Bright Tuesday, our Community prayerfully celebrated the feast of the newly-revealed Martyrs, Saints Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene, rejoicing in the light and grace of the Resurrection.

A festal Paschal Divine Liturgy was solemnly celebrated in our Holy Church, presided over by Protopresbyter Fr. Michael Niarchakos-Tzimis, with concelebrant Presbyter Fr. Phoebos Georgiou. Prayerfully present were Protopresbyter Fr. Eleftherios Tatsis and the Abbess of the Russian Orthodox Monastery of Saint Theognios (ROCOR), Nun Photini.

A special blessing was granted to our Community through the bringing of a sacred relic of the Holy Martyrs, offered for the veneration of the faithful. A supplication service and festal procession followed, manifesting the grace-filled presence of the Saints among the people of God.

As witnesses of the Risen Christ, the Holy New Martyrs inspire and strengthen us to remain steadfast in faith, to walk in repentance, and to live in the truth of the Resurrection.

Truly He is Risen! ✨

The Feast of Holy Pascha was celebrated with great splendour and participation in our community bringing together a large gathering of faithful, families, and visitors of the parish community.

As midnight approached, the faithful assembled in and around the church holding candles in anticipation of the Resurrection proclamation. With the sacred words “Come receive the Light,” the Holy Fire was shared among the congregation, filling the night with light, joy, and a profound sense of unity.

At the stroke of midnight, the proclamation of the Resurrection was joyfully declared from the outdoor platform, in accordance with the living tradition of the Orthodox Church. The hymn “Christ is Risen” was sung with great power and participation by clergy and people alike, while the Paschal greeting echoed across the entire parish grounds: “Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!”

Following the service, the traditional Greek custom of the burning of the effigy of Judas was also observed outdoors. This well-known Paschal folk tradition, preserved in many Greek communities, symbolically expresses the rejection of betrayal and the triumph of truth, faithfulness, and light over darkness.

The celebration reflected the living continuity of the Orthodox faith as it is experienced within the Greek tradition—rooted in Scripture and Holy Tradition, yet also expressed through the cultural life of the people. It also highlighted the growth and vitality of the parish community in St Albans, where generations gather together in worship and shared identity.

We warmly thank all clergy, chanters, volunteers, and parishioners whose dedication and effort contributed to the beauty and smooth coordination of this year’s Paschal celebration.

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

On Holy and Great Friday evening, our parish community gathered in prayerful reverence for the Service of the Lamentations at the Tomb of Christ.

The solemn and deeply moving hymns of the Epitaphios were chanted by the Ladies’ and Maidens’ Sisterhood of our community, while the young Myrrh-bearing girls of our parish gently showered the Epitaphios with flowers, recalling the devotion of the women who came to the Lord’s tomb bearing myrrh on that first holy dawn.

Following the service, hundreds of faithful joined the traditional procession of the Epitaphios through the streets surrounding our parish. In a spirit of prayer, reflection, and unity, the faithful walked together behind the Tomb of Christ, bearing witness to the profound mystery of Holy Friday — the self-offering love of Christ for the life of the world.

Holy Friday reminds us that even in the darkest hour of the Cross, hope is not lost. The Tomb is not the end of the story, but the passage toward the joy of the Resurrection.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in this beautiful and solemn evening of faith and devotion within our parish community.

Today our community prayerfully celebrated the great feast of Palm Sunday.

The church was filled with faithful who gathered to commemorate the triumphant entry of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. During the service, the palm branches were blessed and distributed to the congregation, recalling the ancient greeting of the people who welcomed Christ with the cry: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Palm Sunday stands at the threshold of Holy and Great Week, reminding us that the path of Christ’s glory passes through humility, sacrifice, and the Cross. The blessed palms we receive today are therefore not only a sign of honour, but also a call to remain faithful to Christ as we accompany Him through the sacred days that lead to His Passion and, ultimately, to the joy of His Resurrection.

We wish all our faithful and friends a blessed and spiritually enriching Holy and Great Week.

Today our community at Aghia Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church in St Albans gathered to honour Greek Independence Day and to remember the heroes who gave everything so that Greece could live in freedom.

Although the anniversary itself is marked on March 25, we held our celebration today so that the whole community could participate. The church was filled with families, children, and friends who came together to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who rose up in 1821 after centuries of oppression.

During the celebration we offered a Doxology for our homeland, laid a wreath in honour of the fallen heroes of the Greek War of Independence, and listened with pride as the students of our Greek School recited poems remembering the struggles and hopes of our ancestors.

Greek Independence Day is not only a remembrance of the past. It is a reminder of the spirit of a people who refused to lose their identity, their dignity, and their love of freedom.

Seeing the younger generation stand today and honour this legacy reminds us that the story of Greece is not only written in history books — it continues to live in the hearts of our children and in every community that keeps the flame of Hellenism alive around the world.

With profound sorrow, yet with unshaken faith in the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord, the Greek Orthodox Community of St. Albans “Aghia Paraskevi” announces the repose in the Lord of His Holiness, Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus’-Ukraine.

His Holiness was a towering hierarch of Orthodoxy, a steadfast confessor of the true faith, and a devoted spiritual father, who bore witness to Christ with courage, endurance, and unwavering fidelity throughout the many years of his sacred ministry. His life stood as a living testimony to sacrificial love, pastoral care, and zealous service to the Holy Church.

Our Community, which was deemed worthy to receive his paternal love, guidance, support, and archpastoral blessing—especially in matters concerning the freedom and life of the Church—now offers heartfelt gratitude for his sacred and enduring legacy. In times of need, through his holy interventions and sacred ministrations, he strengthened, upheld, and blessed our faithful, leaving behind not merely a memory, but a living spiritual inheritance.

In filial love and deep gratitude, we now entrust his soul to the ineffable mercy of God. As he cared for us with fatherly devotion during his earthly sojourn, so we pray that he may now stand before the heavenly altar, rejoicing in the continuation of the work he so lovingly nurtured among us.

In the coming days, memorial services will be offered in our Holy Church for the repose of his blessed soul. The flags of our Church shall be flown at half-mast as a visible sign of mourning, honor, and reverence.

We invite all the faithful to unite in fervent prayer, beseeching our Lord Jesus Christ to grant rest to His servant in a place of light, a place of verdure, a place of repose, where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

Memory eternal!
