Planning ahead can feel overwhelming. But with the right help, it doesn’t have to be.

We joined the Victoria Law Foundation and Endeavour Hills Neighbourhood House to talk about wills and power of attorney for Law Week. Together, we supported community members to better understand wills and powers of attorney, helping people feel more confident about protecting what matters to them. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Our team had a fantastic time sharing information to help our community make more informed decisions. As one participant said “I’m so relieved that you came to present on this. There’s so much information out there but I’m so grateful that you have you come out to talk to us about this in such an engaging and clear way. Thank you!”

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, a time to learn, reflect and take meaningful action towards justice and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

South-East Monash Legal Service acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands we work on across the south-east of Melbourne, including the Bunurong and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

Reconciliation is about truth, accountability and building respectful relationships. It is also about taking action to address the systems and structures that continue to create inequality.

As a community legal service, we are committed to supporting fair access to justice and working alongside First Nations communities in ways that respect self-determination.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at one of our (many!) law week events!! ⚽️🚗👩‍⚖️

We played FIFA, chatted road rules, talked about police powers, and helped people in our community speak to a lawyer for free.

Law week is best when it’s connecting our community with free, accessible legal help. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made great.

Recent reporting by the and has highlighted some of the issues affecting our community here in the southeast.

At South-East Monash Legal Service, we see every day how these challenges impact people’s safety, housing security and access to justice. Too many people are being left without the support they need, at the time when they need it most.

Access to free, culturally safe and community-based legal help is essential. When people can’t get advice early, problems escalate quickly, leading to worse outcomes for individuals and greater pressure on courts and other services.

We are calling for stronger investment in community legal services and a coordinated response that puts people and community wellbeing at the centre.

If you or someone you know needs legal help in Melbournes southeast, call us on 9545 7400, or visit SMLS.com.au.

Prison time isn’t fine.

Imprisoning people for unpaid fines debt leads to real harm, often experienced by vulnerable people.

There are more effective and fairer ways to recover unpaid fines than sending people to prison.

The current approach punishes people for being unable to pay and risks criminalising poverty.

We’re calling on the Victorian Attorney-General to abolish imprisonment for fines debt.

Right now, there are more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in prison than ever before.

From coast to coast across Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are being criminalised and imprisoned at alarming rates.

This is happening because state and territory governments are more concerned with political point-scoring than evidence-based reforms.

Locking up kids is an express ticket to a life of crime and suffering. Throwing a child in prison increases the likelihood they will have ongoing contact with the criminal justice system – which only harms our communities.

That’s why we – alongside more than 200 organisations and leaders – have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, calling on him to act.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility 🩷🤍💙

Today (and every day) we celebrate the lives, resilience, and contributions of transgender people, while also acknowledging the ongoing barriers many still face in accessing safety, dignity, and equality. At SMLS, we proudly stand with the trans community. We remain committed to providing free, confidential legal support to LGBTQIA+ communities through our Justice Q program, and to advocating for a more just and inclusive society for all.
