Last week, we had the privilege of visiting QPASST https://qpastt.org.au to deliver an information session on renting rights and responsibilities in Queensland to members of their Third Q***r Culture program.

Third Q***r Culture creates a welcoming, peer-led space for LGBTIQ+ people from diverse backgrounds who have sought safety in Australia, and it was an honour to contribute to such an important initiative.

During the session we explored key aspects of renting in Queensland, including tenant rights and responsibilities, common renting myths, helpful tips and tricks when renting, and where to go for support. It was great to connect, share knowledge, and have open conversations about housing experiences.

A huge thank you to the QPASST team and participants for your engagement, insights, and warm welcome. We’re proud to support communities to feel more confident and informed when it comes to renting in Queensland!

Last month the Community Education team headed to a number of different community events across the State.

These events are important to connect with renters and service providers across Queensland informing them of our services and how we help renters.

This Thursday 4th June, we head to Gympie for a free community event with 30+ other services in Fern Park, Gympie, behind the Senior Citizens Hall.
There will be free food, entertainment, free legal support, free flu vaccinations, free health checks and more.

Come by and find out about your rights as a renter.

Last month, in Central Queensland we were at the annual ‘Hands of Support’ event where we engaged with many attendees and other service providers. There are many services in the CQ region who work hard to ensure anyone facing or at risk of homelessness is not left without support. Thank you to Q Shelter and Rockhampon Regional Council for your support and hosting such an important event.

Last Friday, 22nd May, Tenants Queensland was invited for a morning breakfast in recognition of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

We appreciated the opportunity to be able to part of the conversation and listen to the Panel and the Premier discussing Domestic and Family Violence and preventative measures.

We know that by working together, across different sectors and government departments will help drive change across all sectors of the Queensland community.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs from today Wednesday, 27 May to Wednesday 3 June after National Sorry Day.

National Sorry Day is a significant day as it remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, the Stolen Generations. This year's theme is All In which invites everyone to be part of this ongoing journey. Everyone has a key role in building respectful relationships and understanding.

This week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements as well as explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

At Tenants Queensland we are committed to contributing to achieving reconciliation through the work we do helping renters in Queensland.

At the beginning of May, our Central Queensland Community Education Worker was on the road and headed to the South Burnett region.

We visited the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council office and caught up with the Ergon Energy Team, who were providing information to residents about their electricity bills.

We also visited the Cherbourg Hospital, meeting with their in-house social work team and discussing the value of referring to the QSTARS program.

We also caught up with the staff at Graham House Community Centre in both Cherbourg and Murgon.

These services are in invaluable, particularly in rural areas as their services include access to Services Australia (Centrelink), acting as acting as a Services Australia agent. They also provide supports for accessing NILS Loans, crisis support and community transport.

For the rest of the visit, we caught up with other services, including South Burnett CTC Inc in Kingaroy and the Nanango Neighbourhood Centre.

It is great being able to catch up with these services face-to-face, ensuring that rural communities and services remain connected and up to date with the QSTARS program (Queensland Statewide Tenant Advice and Referral Service) managed by Tenants Queensland.

CEO Penny Carr and Board Director Seleneah More had the opportunity to meet Sam O'Connor MP (Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Youth) last month.

They discussed how the QSTARS program continues to help thousands of renters in Queensland especially during the current housing and cost-of-living crisis. They also mentioned the positive impact our other services have on the wider community and their families.

We appreciate the time with the Minister and the continuous funding of the QSTARS program by the Queensland Government since 2015.
