The 2026 Everald Compton Community Champion Medal is a tribute to the incredible contributions older Australians make to their communities. Congratulations to all 2026 finalists including respected Elder Thomas Slockee – nominated for bringing about secure and affordable housing for Indigenous people; Jane McMillan OAM – nominated for helping to establish the Caboolture Branch (now known as Leukaemia Support Qld) and raising funds to support patients living with Leukaemia and their families; Sandra Slatter – nominated for her dedication to crisis recovery following major events such as the Marysville Black Saturday bushfires and providing support and connection for people living with dementia and their carers; and Robert (Bob) Shewring OAM – nominated for his dedication to several community organisations and his efforts to repatriate the bodies of the last remaining Australian soldiers killed during the Vietnam War buried overseas. If the medal has shown us anything, it is clear, across Australia, communities rely on the selfless contributions, and experiences, of older Australians like Rosie, Thomas, Jane, Sandra and Bob. Congratulations to you all and thank you for your service.

Congratulations to the 2026 Everald Compton Community Champion!

National Seniors Australia (NSA) has announced Rosie Fitzgerald as the recipient of the 2026 Everald Compton Community Champion Medal. Nominations for the prestigious accolade were received nationwide but it was Kilkivan-based Rosie Fitzgerald who took home the silverware for her tireless work to improve the experience of ageing for residents in Kilkivan – a rural region around 50kms northwest of Gympie, for her work to help residents, including those living with dementia, to stay connected and to age in place rather than relocate. Through her win and together with the support of NSA, Rosie hopes to shine a spotlight on the unique and urgent health and aged care needs of people living in regional and rural communities.

Congratulations to Rosie and to all nominees for the vast and varied ways you contribute to your communities! You are all shining examples of the difference older Australians make through humble, selfless, and inspirational work.

NSA thanks all those who supported and contributed to the ceremony’s success including Federal Minister for Health and Ageing; Minister for Disability and the NDIS the Hon. Mark Butler MP who delivered the keynote address and Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann MP who delivered the closing remarks. And Federal Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie MP and Hon Paul de Jersey AC CVO KC who presided as judges at the event proudly sponsored by Nucleus Network, RMBL Investments, Watch Smoke Alarms, and The Good Guys Commercial.

Building connections from day one! 💙

A big thank you to Jennifer Ryder , Coordinator of the Berwick Social Branch, and her partner Michael Hill, who made the long journey from Melbourne to attend the Everald Compton Community Champion Medal ceremony.

Although the Berwick Social Branch was only established in February, it has already built a strong and enthusiastic membership base, with a range of social activities and opportunities for connection planned for the months ahead.

Jennifer and Michael were delighted to meet National Seniors Australia Founder Everald Compton, who enjoyed hearing about the branch's early success and has promised to speak at a future branch event when he is next in Melbourne.

Pictured are Jennifer and Michael with NSA Community Engagement team members Karen Furnivall and David Hallesy.

"Jennifer and Michael have been a pleasure to work with as the branch gets established," Karen said. "The social branch model provides flexibility for volunteers while creating opportunities for members to connect socially and contribute to advocacy in ways that suit their local community."

Interested in joining a branch or starting a new social branch in your area? Send us a message to find out more.
