💜Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month 💜

This Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, we're proud to celebrate the impact of LMRF-funded researchers who are changing the future for women affected by ovarian cancer.

Past LMRF Research Fellow Professor Carlos Salomon is leading the groundbreaking EARLY Study, which aims to pave the way for a population-based screening test for ovarian cancer. The study is recruiting up to 1,500 women across Queensland to help validate a simple blood test that could detect ovarian cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective. LMRF has proudly supported Professor Salomon's research journey, helping advance this promising work from the laboratory towards real-world application.
https://gyncan.org/our-research/current-trials/early-study

Today, LMRF Research Fellow Dr Dominic Guanzon is building on this momentum through research focused on developing improved blood tests for the early detection of ovarian cancer and the prediction of chemotherapy resistance. With the support of LMRF donors and Lions Clubs, Dr Guanzon's growing research team continues to publish impactful research and work towards more personalised treatment options and better outcomes for women facing this disease.

Every breakthrough starts with research, and every research project starts with support.

Together, we are helping drive earlier detection, better treatments and greater hope for women affected by gynaecological cancers.

Thank you for joining us for this special occasion as we celebrated a significant milestone in the history of the QLD & Northern NSW Lions Medical Research Foundation.

It was a privilege to commemorate 60 years since LMRF's first Research Fellow, Dr John K. Healy AM, commenced his fellowship, a remarkable legacy that has helped shape lifesaving medical research and improved the lives of countless people through advances in healthcare and scientific discovery.

We were also delighted to welcome LMRF's 55th Research Fellow, Dr Maxine Tu, and to share in the excitement of the next chapter of groundbreaking research made possible through the generosity and support of our community.

Your attendance helped make this event truly meaningful. Bringing together supporters, researchers, partners and friends of LMRF provided an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, celebrate our achievements, and look ahead to the future of medical research.

On behalf of the Board, Fellows, and the entire LMRF team, thank you for your continued support and commitment to our mission. Together, we are helping to advance research that will lead to better health outcomes for generations to come.

We look forward to sharing more exciting developments with you.

Research is Tomorrow's Hope

Never underestimate the impact of grassroots community fundraising in supporting early career medical researchers. In 1986, the Queensland and Northern New South Wales Lions Medical Research Foundation funded a bright new molecular biologist, Dr Ian Frazer, to research 4h drugs used in the treatment of AIDS. Dr Frazer was about to return to Scotland, but with this funding was able to move from Melbourne to Brisbane to continue his research. Dr Frazer also had ideas on how immunology might provide a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer...

Without cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil, TRI simply would not exist.

When Co-inventor Emeritus Professor Ian Frazer AC could not manufacture the vaccine in Australia in the 1990s, he was forced to go overseas.

When Gardasil became a global success, Professor Frazer set his sights on establishing an institute where research could be translated from the bench to the bedside – including manufacturing capability. In 2011, he became TRI’s founding CEO.

And now, present CEO Professor Maher Gandhi says TRI is close: “His vision of biomedical manufacturing onsite will finally be realised with the opening of ENTRI.”

A manufacturing facility for vaccines and therapies, ENTRI is due to open in October. ENTRI is proudly funded by the Queensland Government and TRI.
