๐Ÿ’ช ICYMI: MacKillop specialist schools have achieved majority support for the IEUโ€™s Single Interest Authorisation campaign, with 61% of staff signing on!

This is a huge milestone in the fight for fair bargaining rights, particularly as the VCEAโ€™s latest offer, despite improvements to wages, proposes cuts to important conditions for specialist school staff.

The latest offer contains several specialist school-specific cuts to conditions, including:
โŒ Applying the same scheduled class time limits to specialist schools as those that apply in primary schools, regardless of year level.
โŒ No cap on after-school meetings for specialist school staff.
โŒ No specialist school allowance, unlike government specialist schools where staff receive an annual allowance of $1,250.
โŒ Unlike government specialist schools, no additional personal/carer's leave, despite the unique demands placed on specialist school staff.

You can read more detailed analysis of the latest offer from the VCEA at ieu.news/offer

And a huge thank you to everyone who has signed a Petition of Support! Letโ€™s keep building our majority and strengthening our collective voice. If you havenโ€™t yet signed a Petition of Support, do so now at ieu.news/pos

Discrimination has no place in our schools.

The IEU welcomes the introduction of a private memberโ€™s Bill by Allegra Spender that seeks to close long-standing discrimination loopholes in faith-based schools.

Under current laws, staff and students in these schools can be subjected to discrimination that would be unlawful in other workplaces.

The proposed legislation would strengthen protections for staff and students, while allowing faith-based schools to maintain their religious character.

๐Ÿšจ Discrimination is still happening. Teachers have been sacked on suspicion of being in same-sex relationships, staff denied promotions because of a previous divorce, a graduate teacher faced threats to their employment for seeking access to IVF and a young unmarried teacher dismissed after becoming pregnant. These shocking cases would be condemned in all other workplaces.

The IEU is calling on the federal government to act on its commitment to reform discrimination laws and ensure school staff and students have the protections they deserve.

There is no reason for further delay. The Anthony Albanese government should match Allegra Spenderโ€™s leadership and pass these laws. School staff, students and the community have waited long enough.

As industrial action continues at Overnewton Anglican Community College, IEU member Kathryn reminds us that the pay and conditions we enjoy today were fought for and won by generations of union members before us. ๐Ÿ’ช

Progress doesn't happen on its own. It takes workers standing together, taking action and fighting for better.

And that's exactly what IEU members at Overnewton are doing in their campaign for a new Agreement.

Stronger together. Union proud. โœŠ

Bargaining for a new Tasmanian Catholic Agreement is now well underway, with the IEU and Catholic Education Tasmania (CET) holding three full-day bargaining meetings across August and September. Further meetings are scheduled fortnightly.

The IEUโ€™s member Log of Claims contains 62 claims, with membersโ€™ key priorities of better salaries, reduced workload and safer workplaces remaining at the centre of our approach. CET has now also tabled its own 13 claims.

There has already been useful progress in a number of areas, including:
๐Ÿ‘‰ removing junior rates
๐Ÿ‘‰ maintaining a maximum school year of 195 days
๐Ÿ‘‰ moving away from the proposed forced-transfer concept
๐Ÿ‘‰ increasing the camp allowance
๐Ÿ‘‰ developing new provisions covering the right to disconnect, delegatesโ€™ rights and reproductive health.

There are, however, some significant issues that will require further discussion and member consultation.

IEU members at Overnewton Anglican Community College are continuing protected industrial action in their fight for a fair new Agreement. ๐Ÿ’ช

This week, members took their campaign to the schoolโ€™s Presentation Night, wearing campaign posters and handing out flyers to parents, with plenty of support from the Overnewton community.

Members are fighting for:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Competitive wages for all staff
๐Ÿ‘‰ Clear classifications for Education Support staff
๐Ÿ‘‰ Workload limits for Teachers

This is union power in action: IEU members standing together, making their voices heard and staying strong in the fight for a fair Agreement. โœŠ
