Join us for an online workshop all about creating your very own comics! Led by professional comic artist Rachel Ang , this workshop is an opportunity to explore how comics help us navigate and solve personal problems.

When: Wednesday 9 September, 6pm online
Ages: 16 to 25

Bring a problem (emotional, political, financial, romantic, culinary etc) to present to a group of your creative peers, in the same way someone might ask a tarot deck for advice. You will then swap your dilemmas with your peers and attempt to create a comic strip based on someone else's prompt.

We will use comic techniques to unpack, sample and interpret these problems. By drawing someone’s dilemma you will explore possible solutions and pull from the language of dreams to create personal, essayistic and expansive comics.

Explore cyanotype techniques alongside AI image-making tools in this hands-on workshop that explores how digital and analogue processes can come together.

Along the way, we'll explore the creative possibilities of working across old and new technologies, while opening conversations about the social, environmental and ethical questions surrounding AI image generation.

You'll learn how to make an acetate negative, expose your image onto light-sensitive paper using sunlight, and develop your final print with water to reveal cyanotype's signature blue tones.

Learn to cook simple, budget-friendly meals and build confidence in the kitchen.
Whether you're moving out of home, cooking for yourself for the first time, or simply looking for new ideas, this hands-on workshop is a great place to start.

Age: 18 to 29 years

Led by the NEST team, you'll learn practical kitchen skills, prepare easy and affordable recipes, and discover simple ways to eat well while making the most of your ingredients. Along the way, you'll pick up tips for reducing food waste, planning meals and cooking with confidence.

This is a 6-week program, and you must be able to attend all of the following sessions:

Applications are currently open for an exciting residency opportunity with international artists, hosted at SIGNAL with 전주문화재단 for Melbourne Fringe.

We are recruiting 9 local participants ages 18-29 from Narrm Melbourne to work with the 9 participants who will travel here from Korea for the program.

The experience begins with two short online meetings in September to get to know your collaborators and form small teams. Then the core of the program is a 6-day intensive of daily sessions from Monday 12 October through Saturday 17 October.

Melbourne participants will receive a stipend of $50/day to offset the cost of food and travel during the intensive.

For emerging creatives, this is a chance to meet like-minded collaborators from overseas and grow your practice through peer learning. While sharing your own cultural and artistic background, you will expand the reach of your work and build your capacity for future arts exchange opportunities. We are seeking applicants who are driven by curiosity, interest in cross-cultural collaboration, and flexible open-minded ways of working.

We have had such a busy first half of the year at SIGNAL! From silver clay making to ceramic ponies, linocuts and patches, we've hosted so many incredibly talented artists and given young people in Melbourne the chance to try a new artform for free.

Our SIGNAL Studio program is for young people aged 14 to 25 years. We host free workshops on Saturdays throughout the year with skilled creatives, introducing young people to new creative art practices.

SIGNAL is currently closed for maintenance until August 10 as we prepare our programming for the rest of the year. Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter (link in bio!) or socials to be the first to know when ticketing opens.

Our Curators Collective is open for new members! This is a collective of young people ages 16 to 25, who gather on a monthly basis to plan creative art activations for their peers.

Most recently, the collective wrapped up a 2-week program of creative workshops, professional development opportunities and live music performances for SIGNAL Winter. The collective plans activities from start to finish with mentorship support from SIGNAL and our program facilitator Matisse Laida.

This is a free, volunteer opportunity for young people aged 16 to 25 in Melbourne.

Sign up now! Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 25. Applications may be closed earlier if all spots in the collective are filled.

Our Waring Season Celebration marked the end of SIGNAL Winter, a debut 2-week program full of free workshops and professional development opportunities for young people. This Saturday, we are hosting a roundtable for young people with three creative industry experts. This is a free session where you can listen in to their expertise, ask questions, and get a sense of how to navigate your own journey in the creative arts.

Amrit Gill
Amrit brings over twenty years of experience as an arts facilitator, curator, and strategist. She is the present CEO of Theatre Network Australia.

Nū
Nū is an Ethiopian-Australian sound artist, vocalist and live coder whose work blends non-Western musical traditions, improvisation and Afrofuturism

David Blumenstein
David is a service designer, writer, cartoonist and animation director based in Melbourne. He is a founding member of Squishface Studio, a co-share workspace for comic artists.
