Next week at BBC Gardeners’ World Live we are releasing our report: Towards Ethical Collections. If you are grower or importer of ferns for the trade or a curator of a public or national collection of ferns, please find us at the show and we can give you a copy. A digital version will be available for the public next week too.

Towards Ethical Collections establishes a principled framework for the cultivation, exchange and long-term conservation of tropical ferns in the UK. By fostering collaboration between botanic gardens and private growers, this initiative ensures legal compliance and ethical grounding. Together, we safeguard rare species and specialised expertise, transforming individual collections into a unified, effective conservation resource.

Fern Botany Post No. 39: Bulbil

‘Bulbils are small vegetative growths on a fern frond that can develop into new plants. In several fern genera, they form on the tip, costa or lamina (upper surface) of the frond and drop off when they are ready to root. They can also be called plantlets, bulblets or buds.’
