It's official - the ‘presumptive cancers’ legislation passed through Parliament today! RFSA has been a strong voice advocating for this reform and we're so pleased with this result.

The ‘presumptive cancers’ legislation makes NSW the first jurisdiction in Australia to include two additional female reproductive cancers - vaginal and vulval - as presumptive cancers.

Volunteer firefighters lodging a claim for a cancer on the expanded list will no longer have to prove it was caused by firefighting, which can be incredibly difficult due to the complex nature of how cancer develops.

Under the changes, firefighters’ presumptive access to compensation has been expanded to cover ten additional cancers: primary site lung, pancreatic, thyroid and skin cancers, and female and male reproductive cancers including cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulval and pe**le.

Apply now for an RFSA Professional Development Scholarship and give your studies the boost they deserve – applications close 15 October.

One of the key support programs offered by the RFSA, the purpose of these scholarships is to:

✨ Enhance the professional and personal development of members;
✨ Improve career development and;
✨ Promote a high level of professional service to the community.

The scholarships are divided into two categories: President's Scholarships, which are awarded to both volunteer and staff members, and the Chris Lord Memorial Scholarship, awarded to the most suitable volunteer applicant.

Past recipients have been supported for everything from certificate courses to post-graduate studies, benefitting their own careers and their brigades and communities.

Both RFS volunteers and staff are eligible to apply. Successful candidates will need to enrol in their chosen course within 18 months from the date of scholarship notification.

Congratulations to the eight RFS members receiving the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in the 2024 King's Birthday Honour list. The AFSM was instituted in 1988 and recognises those who have rendered distinguished service as a member of the Australian fire service.

With High Fire Danger and windy conditions across parts of the state today, including in the south west and Riverina areas, a reminder to permit holders that you should contact your local fire authority before undertaking any burns, as permits may be suspended in your area.

Residents and land managers should check conditions and only undertake pile burning and hazard reduction if safe to do so. Also, make sure you check previous burns in case of reignition.
