National Tertiary Education Union - NTEU

National Tertiary Education Union - NTEU The national page of the NTEU; Australia's union for all staff in tertiary education. We won't always agree with each other, and that's okay.

Authorised by D Cahill, National Tertiary Education Union, 120 Clarendon St, Southbank VIC 3006. Welcome to the page of the National Tertiary Education Union, we’re so glad you’re here. NTEU is Australia's national union for staff working in tertiary education. It represents all professional staff, academic and research staff, as well those working in ELICOS and TAFE administration. This

page is a place to participate in meaningful conversations about our rights at work in higher education and associated causes and news. We encourage lively debate and a variety of opinions particularly around ideas and policy. At the same time, we expect everyone to express themselves in a way that's respectful and constructive. Your comment may be removed if:
● It is racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise discriminatory or defamatory.
● It is abuse, threatening, encourages violence or incites hatred.
● It involves swearing, name-calling, personal attacks or other anti-social behaviour
● It includes video or images that our community may find distressing (graphic violence,
po*******hy, etc).
● Personal, public criticism of staff who may be simply doing their job.
● It is wildly off-topic, designed to sell something or spam
● It is in a language other than English (we can't always vouch for the suitability of these
comments, so we'll sometimes remove them to be on the safe side).
● We reserve to the right to make this a safe place for our members to express their views
● Ultimately the NTEU may be held responsible for content on our Facebook and so we may delete disinformation or misinformation and ban users responsible for repeatedly misleading posts. Repeated failure to stick to these rules may see you blocked from our page without warning. TL;DR: Please don't be a jerk :)

We don’t give personalised industrial or legal advice on social media, so if you are an NTEU member looking for representation, please contact your local Branch, union organiser or call the national office on 03 9254 1910. If you are not a member and wish to join, you can do so online

Staff across QUT are facing chronic understaffing, unrealistic expectations, and growing pressure to do more with less. Many staff are regularly working beyond paid hours, contributing to stress, burnout, and increasing psychosocial risks at work.

We call on QUT management to come to the table and work constructively with the NTEU in bargaining to reach an agreement that:

✅ genuinely addresses unsafe and unreasonable workloads;
✅ improves staffing levels and workload management practices;
✅ ensures proper consultation with staff; and,
✅ provides for enforceable workload protections.

Healthy universities require healthy staff. Real change is needed now.

"The sense of hurt and confusion among staff is palpable. These wounds can’t be healed overnight, and Deakin management now has a serious challenge in front of it to rebuild trust. The NTEU stands ready to help them with that." –NTEU Deakin Branch President Professor Reece Walters

The National Tertiary Education Union has saved more than 140 jobs at Deakin University after successfully pressuring management to scrap its damaging plan.

Monash University has failed to back-pay thousands of casual academics owed more than $10 million, almost a year after a landmark Federal Court ruling found the university had broken workplace law.

NTEU Monash Branch President Dr Ben Eltham said the same casual academics who had their wages stolen are now being shown contempt by management.

“These academics are on the verge of attending the worst first birthday party of all time,” he said.

“Monash students lose marks for every day their assignments are overdue, but when the University fails to pay back its teachers, nothing happens.

NTEU Victorian Division Secretary Sarah Roberts said the behaviour was consistent with a pattern of disregard for staff.

"The Vice-Chancellor takes home more than a million dollars a year. Finding the resources and the will to pay back workers who were systematically underpaid should not be this hard,” she said.

NTEU National President Dr Alison Barnes said a refusal to take wage theft seriously was a hallmark of the national university governance crisis.

“This is what happens when vice-chancellors and senior executives operate without consequences under a broken governance model. We’ve seen $300 million in wage theft across the sector, but who has lost their job or faced any disciplinary action?”

Big news out of Burnet Institute! Staff have come together and launched NTEU by talking to colleagues, growing membership, and building a strong union from the ground up.

NTEU isn't just a union for university staff. We represent workers across independent medical research institutes because everyone deserves secure jobs, fair pay and a say in the decisions that affect their work.

The Courier, 15 June 2026:

Staff at Fed Uni campuses have weathered more than 25 major restructures and hundreds of job losses over the past six years. As negotiations get under way on a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has called for stability and more staff involvement in the decision-making process.

“We're actually not looking to restrict change or stop change, but we're looking to increase the quality of change by involving staff in those change processes. This is a very deeply felt and widely felt issue. It's about securing a long-term vision for the university and its regions because Fed Uni is such an important institution in Ballarat and the regions.” –Dr Mathew Abbott, NTEU Federation University Branch President

⭐️⭐️⭐️

NTEU members at Federation University have kicked off their bargaining campaign for fair pay, job security and a real say in decisions that impact staff.

When staff have a say, universities work better for everyone.
