Labour Day reminds us that even an evening with the people we love was once something workers had to fight for. They stood together because everyone deserved time to rest, be with family and have a life beyond work.

We owe them more than a thank you. We owe it to each other to protect that time, and to keep fighting for the people who still get too little of it.

A 4 day working week, with fewer hours and no loss of pay, carries that hope forward. It could mean more time with our kids as they grow up, with parents who need us, or with friends we’ve been meaning to see for months. Time we shouldn’t always have to squeeze around work.

Today, Professionals Australia honours the workers who won the 8 hour day. Their fight gave us more room to live. Ours can do the same for those who come after us.

Happy Labour Day to our members and communities in NSW, SA and the ACT. Your time outside work matters. It always has.
