The Tasmanian Eye Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation established in 2008 with the intention to improve the delivery of the ophthalmic health service in Tasmania. It is a registered charity with the Australian Taxation Office and donations are fully tax deductible. Our core goals are to ensure ongoing benefits for the ophthalmic health and wellbeing of Tasmanians through provi
sion of a quality statewide ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment service; through the education of medical practitioners, related health professionals and the community and patients; and by providing significant research contributions to the knowledge base and clinical treatment of ophthalmic disease which is particularly focused on the needs of the Tasmanian population. The institute is currently involved in several research projects that include global and Australia Multi Centre sites as well as local research. As a teaching organization, we provide ophthalmology training and education for the local medical community and hold public eye health information and support sessions in our centre. Tasmanians seeking specialist health care have been at a disadvantage when compared to their counterparts on the mainland. As an isolated and semi-rural region of Australia, the availability of advanced medical technologies in Tasmania has historically been sparse, requiring costly and time-consuming interstate travel for patients wishing to access treatment. The absence of local facilities causes preventable deterioration in the health status of many individuals. For ophthalmic conditions in particular, treatment delays may result in irreversible vision loss and potential blindness. Our overriding aim is to improve ophthalmic health by developing the necessary infrastructure to support the local community. Our overriding purpose is to discover medical evidence and clinical insights which will contribute to the management and prevention of vision loss. As a charitable trust, we rely heavily on the support of the community to ensure quality research and education by the Institute is ongoing. All donations are tax deductible.
