Without treatment, children may struggle to eat, speak, or attend school. At Operation Smile Australia, we believe every child deserves access to safe, life-changing surgical care. For just $300,

a single cleft surgery can give a child the chance to eat, speak, smile, and thrive. Our volunteer medical teams from Australia and New Zealand work alongside local hospitals, train healthcare professionals, and provide essential equipment—creating lasting, sustainable change. Because every child deserves the chance to smile with confidence.

Clara was born with a severe cleft lip and palate in a small village in Madagascar — where fear and stigma are very real.

The shame around her condition was so heavy that it tore her family apart.

Clara was bullied at school. She struggled to speak. And she often stayed home, hiding from the world. But her father, Dede, never gave up hope of getting help for his daughter. For six years, he continued to search.

For many families, there’s no clear path to treatment. Without surgery, cleft conditions can lead to malnutrition, illness, speech delays — and deep social isolation.

When Dede found hope through our program — Clara was able to access the surgery she needed.

“When we came home from the hospital after surgery, everybody in our village was amazed to see her,” Dede says. “She looked so different, like another person.”

With access to surgery, a child’s future can change completely.

We wanted to share a quick update on our EOFY campaign, thanks to your generosity, we've raised funds to help provide life-changing surgery for 90 children so far. That's all thanks to you!

With 7 days to go until June 30, we're just 10 surgeries away from our goal of 100.

Every surgery beyond 100 is another life changed. And with our matched donor still doubling every gift, your support goes twice as far.

Thank you for being part of this. It really does make a huge difference in these children’s lives.

Vien and P**c are two brothers from rural Vietnam and belong to a big family of five children. Their parents spend long days working in the cassava fields to support them.

From an early age, both boys struggled with health challenges caused by their cleft conditions. For two-year-old P**c, even drinking fluids was difficult.

To reach care, their family first walked a long distance, then travelled more than three hours by bus to the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Hospital in Hanoi, an OSA partner hospital.

At their first medical evaluation, doctors found P**c had a mild ear infection, so his surgery was delayed for a week until he was well enough for the procedure.

Now, both brothers have received the surgeries they needed — a reminder of what’s possible when families can access safe, timely care. 💛

When the bus returned, their mum, Pha, greeted it with a grateful smile — so thankful for the support that helped transform her sons’ health, wellbeing and futures.

Salamat, Bayanihan!

A highlight from a day well spent celebrating Philippine culture and community at the Bayanihan Festival at the weekend.

Operation Smile Australia is proud to be part of Bayanihan for the third consecutive year — and grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of the main raffle, which supports our mission to provide cleft surgery to children in need.

Thank you to everyone who made the festival so lively, delicious and welcoming, we enjoyed meeting you.

Meet Jupiter 🏀

This beautiful smile belongs to Jupiter — he's a confident teenager who enjoys basketball.

But 12 years ago, he was a shy four-year-old living with an untreated cleft condition. Other children teased him, and he often kept to himself.

His parents loved him deeply, but they had no way to afford the surgery he needed. They made a modest living from fishing, and after Typhoon Yolanda destroyed their home, they faced challenges far beyond their control.

Then an Operation Smile surgical programme in Cebu City gave them hope.
That surgery changed everything.

When Jupiter's mother saw him afterwards, she cried with joy. "He is so beautiful!" she said.

This is what impact looks like — care that transforms lives.

This EOFY, we’re aiming to help fund 100 life changing cleft surgeries so more children like Jupiter can access the care they need.

Nine-year-old Anitha travelled five hours by bus with her family to reach surgery in Vijayawada, India.

She’d already undergone cleft lip repair as a baby. This time, she needed a complex cleft palate procedure — and she faced it with extraordinary courage.

Behind her care was a dedicated team of volunteer medical professionals, including Australian anaesthetist Dr Stacey Swinkels.

"These are normal children with hopes and dreams. Craniofacial differences should never stand in the way of reaching their life goals," she says.

At this Vijayawada, India Program (22 Nov – 1 Dec 2025):

• 76 cleft surgeries completed over 10 days
• 137 patients screened
• 36 volunteers delivering care and mentorship alongside local teams

This is what impact looks like — care that transforms lives today and strengthens local healthcare for tomorrow.

One intensive day to ensure decisive, coordinated care is second nature💙

At our recent Global Impact Forum, 18 of our highly capable medical volunteers got stuck into a one-day Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) refresher — ensuring they’re across the latest guidelines and best practice.

The training covered current resuscitation care, airway and ventilation strategies, medication procedural recommendations, and closed loop communication—so care is coordinated and decisive when every second matters.

All of our Operation Smile Australia volunteers are required to hold a current PALS certification. It's part of our ongoing commitment to safe, high-quality care for every surgery we do.

Here's a few snaps of our incredible medical volunteers in action 📸

For the next ten days, Dr Victor Chen, an anaesthetist from Australia, will be volunteering at the Operation Smile Philippines - Cebu Center of Excellence .

During his time in Cebu, Dr Chen will be providing essential anaesthesia care for children undergoing life‑changing cleft surgery.

He will also be working closely with local medical teams, sharing expertise to support ongoing training to help strengthen safe‑surgery capacity in the region.

Volunteers like Dr Chen play a crucial role not only in delivering high‑quality care, but also in building sustainable skills and systems that create lasting impact for children and families across the Philippines.

Ramata, a child from rural Ghana, faced significant barriers to care in early childhood.

Born with a cleft condition, her mother, Mariana, made six unsuccessful journeys in search of surgery — each time raising money for bus fares, travelling long distances and returning home without the treatment her daughter needed.

With Operation Smile’s support, Ramata finally received a series of cleft lip and palate surgeries. At a later follow-up, we learned that she was thriving at school, engaged in learning and participating with confidence.

This EOFY, we’re aiming to help fund 100 surgeries so more children like Ramata can access the care they deserve. Every gift makes a real difference.
