Public Land in Public Hands!

Date: Thursday 11 June

Time: 5 - 7 pm

Location: Father Bacinskas Lithuanian Cultural Hall, 49 Gladstone Rd, Highgate Hill

The Visy Site — The Last Major Public Land in South Brisbane

The State Government is moving to sell the Visy Site on Montague Rd, 7.1 hectares of publicly owned land in South Brisbane to private developers; land roughly the size of 5 football fields, or more than 175 average Australian housing blocks. It is the last major parcel of publicly owned land in South Brisbane and West End, and this sale is being progressed with no community consultation and no public say.

The implications for our neighbourhood are significant for green space, for affordable housing, for the kind of community infrastructure that a growing inner city suburb genuinely needs. Once this land is gone, it is gone and there is no getting it back.

Kurilpa Futures - Planning for People

08/06/2026

WECA and Don’t Sell South Bank 2.0 spoke on the news last week.

4101 is at a turning point — and the stakes are high.

We need housing, but not at the cost of our future. Schools are full. Infrastructure is stretched. Greenspace is disappearing.

The former Visy site is one of the last publicly owned riverfront sites in inner Brisbane.

Once public land is gone, it’s gone for good.

A plan for 5,000 luxury apartments without guaranteed infrastructure is not good planning — it’s short-term thinking.

Join the dots……

The Visy site mentioned here in this article showing the rise of public lands being subsumed by EDQ for sale and development by the LNP State Government just as they decriminalise developer donations.

"If development donations are considered too risky at local government level, because councils are making planning decisions, the same logic is applying at the state level, where we've also got departments ministers and agencies making planning and infrastructure decisions that can pose those same risks," Centre for Public Integrity's Professor Appleby.

More than $170,000 in donations from developers has been given to Queensland state politicians since laws banning developer donations were overturned in March.
