Historical Society of Sorell Inc

Historical Society of Sorell Inc We are a volunteer group researching, collecting and sharing the history of Sorell and surrounds in south east Tasmania – from deep time to today.

Our exhibitions at Sorell are open Wednesdays 9-12, Saturdays 12-3 or by appointment. New members welcome. We collect, record and share stories, photographs and artefacts that tell the story of the Sorell district of south east Tasmania – from Orielton to Marion Bay, from Nugent to Primrose Sands and of course the townships of Sorell, Dodges Ferry and Dunalley.

Vale Tony Bruce-Mullins

It is with sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Tony in Wentworth, NSW. Tony was a former Treasurer of the Sorell Historical Society and good friend to many. Our condolences go to his family.

On this day in 1967 devastating bushfires burned to the edge of Sorell township. Five local people lost their lives.

Aerial photos taken 19 February 1967 show the aftermath - the racecourse grandstand, railway buildings and houses destoyed, scorched paddocks and stock feed piled on the recreation ground.

We’re putting together a research item on the ‘67 fires for the new online collection and a special exhibit in 2027.

Please get in touch if you have first hand memories, photos or other details to share.

The Sorell district is rich in natural and cultural heritage – on World Wetlands Day we're reminded of the significant wetlands and waterways along our coast that have sustained life and livelihoods for thousands of years.

>> Pitt Water-Orielton Lagoon RAMSAR site
>> Bream Creek/Marion Bay wetlands
>> Carlton River/Primrose Sands wetlands
>> Blue Lagoon at Dodges Ferry
>> Sorell Rivulet and Iron Creek estuaries
>> Lagoon Park by Okines Beach at Dodges Ferry Primary School
>> Frogmore Creek, Gillingbrook, Forcett Creek, China Creek and many seasonal waterways along the coast

Wetlands feature in our local history in many ways: water, food, cultural connections, industry, transport, recreation, volunteering, local identity and more.

Please get in touch if you have something to add or a question to share.

Welcome to new member Judi who called into the history rooms today checking on Gatehouse and other family connections for the second edition of her book “The Marshalls of Bicheno”.

Our volunteers learned from Judi’s research and family story too, including where the post offices had been in Gordon Street.

Delving into the SHS collection, we confirmed there were two: 4 Gordon St 1906-18 (where Uncle Alby’s coffee shop is now) and the new Post & Telegraph Office opened in 1954 on the Gordon St & Somerville St corner.
