On 13 August 2026, the Social Welfare Organisation provided interest-free revolving loan assistance to seven families residing in the Grankulam Grama Niladhari Division under the Araiyampathy Divisional Secretariat.

The funding for this revolving loan programme was provided by MahalirIllam Australia. Each family received a loan of Rs. 40,000, amounting to total financial assistance of Rs. 280,000.00, to support and develop their self-employment and income-generating activities.

The objective of this revolving loan scheme, established in 2020, is to empower women to establish or expand their own income-generating activities, thereby enabling families to achieve greater financial independence and self-reliance.

A revolving loan is a repayable financial assistance scheme whereby funds repaid by existing beneficiaries are reinvested to provide interest-free loans to new beneficiaries. This approach enables the programme to support an increasing number of families on a sustainable and continuing basis.

To date, a total of 247 beneficiaries has benefited from MahalirIllam’s Revolving Loan Programme.

The Livelihood Support Project, funded by MahalirIllam Australia and implemented by Social Welfare Organisation Puthukkudiyiruppu Batticaloa, aims to help economically disadvantaged families achieve sustainable income and self-reliance rather than providing short-term financial assistance.
Beneficiaries were carefully selected through interviews and field assessments of their family and economic circumstances. Livelihood and business equipment was subsequently provided to selected beneficiaries in the Manmunai Pattu Divisional Secretariat Division on 17 and 20 August 2026, in the presence of the Divisional Superintendent Mrs Sathananthi Namasivayam.

Under the Livelihood Project funded by Mahalir Illam Australia, two sewing machines were provided on 19 June 2026 to two young women from economically disadvantaged families who had successfully completed the sewing training course conducted at SWO’s Pallugamam Sewing Training Centre. The assistance was granted based on their requests and upon the recommendations of the Divisional Secretary, with the objective of encouraging and supporting their self-employment initiatives.

This project, implemented with financial assistance from Mahalir Illam Australia, aims to help these young women improve their quality of life by creating self-employment opportunities and generating a sustainable income. Both beneficiaries are residents of the Poratheevupattu Divisional Secretariat Division and come from low-income families. They have demonstrated a commitment to utilizing their sewing skills to engage in self-employment and earn an income independently.

SWO expressed its sincere gratitude to Mahalir Illam Australia for its generous financial assistance and continued support of the Sewing Training Program at Pallugamam & Puthukudiyiruppu. To date, a total of 349 young women have benefited from the training programs conducted through the SWO Sewing Training Centres, acquiring valuable vocational skills that have enabled them to pursue self-employment opportunities and build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

On 19.05.2026, Revolving Loan assistance was provided to 9 families residing in the Grankulam Grama Niladhari divisions under the Aarayampathy Divisional Secretariat. A total of Rs. 360,000.00 was distributed, with each family receiving Rs. 40,000.

To date, more than 240 families have benefited from this project funded by Mahalirillam Australia and administered by Social Welfare Organisation Batticaloa.

The Revolving Loan Project provides interest-free financial assistance to women-headed families to help them start or improve self-employment activities. The loans are repaid in installments, and the recovered funds are then reused to support other families, creating a continuous cycle of community assistance.

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, with the aim of honoring the mothers of the children of Thilagawathiyar Home and creating an opportunity for mothers and children to spend joyful time together, Mahalirillam Australia funded an event on 10.05.2026, and Social Welfare Organization hosted the program at Thilakavadiyar Girls’ Home, Thiruppallugamam, Batticaloa.

A social welfare program involving the distribution of new Saree and dry food items was organized and conducted. The event was presided by SWO’s Vice President, Mr. Sathanandam.

In addition, to entertain and honor the mothers, the girls of the home performed poetry recitals, speeches, and drama presentations. These activities emotionally expressed the greatness of motherhood and created a joyful and touching atmosphere at the venue.

The event became an excellent example of social service that strengthened social harmony and humanitarian values. It is noteworthy that such programs provide great support to families facing economic difficulties. Finally, lunch was provided to everyone who participated in the event.

On 10/04/2026, five bicycles were provided to students who travel long distances on foot each day to attend school, following a request supported by the Manmunai South-West Paddippalai Divisional Secretariat.

The bicycle distribution event was attended by the Child Development Officer of the Manmunai South-West Paddippalai Divisional Secretariat, Social Welfare Organisation representatives, and the parents of the beneficiary students, making the occasion truly meaningful.

The total cost of the project was Rs. 212,500, generously donated by members of Mahalir Illam.
