No matter how you garden or what gardens you like, there is always something else to appreciate. Do you like cactuses? They are very slow growing but very special to see plants from all over the world in one place.

Why do you garden? Or specifically, why join a Community Garden?
One of our wonderful members, Prisco, 'penned' his response (and please take the time to read it). In short....healthy food, staying physically active, contributing to mental health and wellbeing. Yes! But interestingly, it is 'helping build (a) sense of community' that Prisco has found most rewarding and compelling. Thanks, Prisco.

Have you grown sweet potatoes? Well, if you haven't harvested yet (in cooler climates) then why not take cuttings to start off next season's plantings.
Cuttings need to be 15-30 cm long, cut diagonally below a node and cut back most of the leaves. A cloche - commercial, a cut down drink bottle with top removed or plastic bag held open with sticks, helps the whole process. As does dipping the bottom in softwood/semi softwood rooting hormone or pure honey. Place in a hot house or sheltered morning sun position. Water as needed and watch for too much condensation.
AND don't forget, when the seedlings are planted out, young leaves are a great spinach substitute in summer.

Did you get any gardening done today? The rain only stopped as we were finishing up our Working Bee. But, coats on, that didn't stop us. More painted stones, logs and plants went into the front native garden. The plants were sourced from the Carrum Indigenous Nursery, Australian Plant Society, Mornington expo and CERES. We continued potting on cuttings for our October Open Day (3rd Sunday) and bagging seeds. Pruning, weeding, planting and reconstructing a wicking bed were some of our other tasks (some photos from last week). Well done everyone.

Stir fry it, steam it or saute it, Bok Choy and Pak Choy are very versatile and tasty Chinese vegetables. Extend your harvesting time by cutting or snapping off a few outer leaves at a time, and the plant will grow more leaves as we have proved in the past. As a punnet usually contains 8 plants, you should end up with a terrific harvest. Do you have a favorite recipe?

Okra and tomatillo. Have you eaten them? Grown them? If you're thinking ahead to next summer, we'd definitely recommend them. Prolific, drought tolerant, nutritious but hard to get at your local supermarket. Okra tip - pick at 5 to 8 cm long for optimum taste and eatability. d
