International Day of Education, January 24th, 2025.
Access to education is a basic human right and essential to the health and wellbeing of individuals across the world. Today we celebrate International Day of Education and highlight the issues many young people in life face in accessing the education they deserve to thrive. According to the United Nations currently, 250 million children and youth are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. More effort needs to be made globally to ensure our young people receive access to a quality education.
Access to quality education helps people learn about the big wide world around us, reach their full potential, learn new skills, develop the ability to solve problems, become part of a community and develop relationships. Lack of education can lead to poor health, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, and social isolation and contributes to a poor economy.
Receiving a quality education in PNG can be challenging for our students due to lack of facilities, transport, teachers, funding and access to learning materials. At the Sir Brian Bell Foundation, our mission is to improve the lives of people through Health and Education initiatives. We continue to strive to do our part to ensure everyone receives access to a quality education across PNG and are working with some incredible organisations including Buk bilong Pikinini, LiteHaus International, National St John Ambulance Service PNG, Niunet, Gateway Children's Fund and more.
“Education is a human right, and we greatly appreciate those organisations, parents, teachers and students who are making incredible efforts to ensure education is prioritised” commented Sir Brian Bell Foundation CEO Bronwyn Wright.
“Investing in a quality education has a huge impact on an individual’s future, it can transform lives and create safer communities. We strongly believe in the power of an education, as a community we all have a responsibility to provide learning experiences to our students to build positive futures. Many advances have been made over the last few years to improve educational outcomes, but we still have a long way to go. Invest in your child’s future, invest in their education.” concluded Sir Brian Bell Foundation, CEO Ms Bronwyn Wright.

AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation. Under the theme “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation”, the 2025 International Day of Education inspires reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities navigate, understand and influence technological advancement. As computer and AI-driven systems become more sophisticated, the boundaries between human intention and machine-driven action often blur, raising critical questions about how to preserve, redefine, and, ideally, elevate human agency in an age of technological acceleration.
