Our team have been working extensively to ensure all people experiencing homelessness in our service area are supported to participate in the census.

Our CEO, Heidi Tucker has spoken to the Star Mail News , ABC Melbourne, and SBS News in the lead up to Census night where she has described the census data on homelessness in Australia as ‘precious evidence’.

The census data is a vital opportunity for all Australians to understand how widespread homelessness is.

It allows homelessness organisations of all sizes to be able to advocate for better support and funding and enables the government to see where the need is greatest.

We need greater investment in affordable housing, stronger support services and the political will to make ending homelessness a national priority.

At StreetSmart, we also know that change happens when communities step up.

That's why we're proud that it's also CafeSmart Week. This Friday 7 August, hundreds of cafés and roasters across Australia will donate $1 from every coffee sold to support local organisations responding to homelessness. Leanne and David from our Homelessness team were on air with 3MDR 97.1 FM this morning discussing all things homelessness in the local area.

We took the opportunity during Homelessness Week to raise the need for as well as providing an insight into how much demand for support there is from individuals, young people and families experiencing homelessness.

Thank you to Tina for having us on and helping to provide a look into what we see daily operating the crisis access point for Melbourne's outer-east.

This week is National Homelessness Week. A week for reflection, advocacy and action.

Unsurprisingly, the theme for 2026 is: Homelessness Action Now — because we know what works. Now we need action at the scale and urgency the crisis demands.

Pursuing meaningful client impact at a scale that truly meets community need has been a hallmark of Anchor’s work of late. Rapidly expanding preventative solutions to youth homelessness is what we're focused on.

We look forward to participating in events across this week, and adding our voice to the chorus of homelessness services around Australia that see day in, day out the cost of inaction.

Our Youth Foyer students rolled up their sleeves last week to dig, plant and prepare the garden, thanks to a gardening session with Thomas from Bunnings Lilydale.

Giving young people the opportunity to take pride in their home and their achievements, even as simple as growing some plants, is a great example of how the Lilydale Youth Foyer empowers young people.

A huge thank you to Bunnings Lilydale for supporting our Youth Foyer and helping young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness continue to grow.
