Foster and Kinship Care Anchor is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a proud history of serving Melbourne’s outer east for over 45 years. We assist some of the most vulnerable in our community through services including homeless support, foster care, kinship care, community education and family reconciliation. Our services help people affected by crisis and trauma to restore relationships, get the support they need, and take charge of their futures. We also work proactively to create stronger and more resilient communities by building local partnerships, educating community leaders and setting up grassroots initiatives. Ask Izzy is a vital part of helping people who need it. It connects people in desperate need of support during times of crisis to services such as Anchor.

But now Ask Izzy’s future is under threat because of insecure funding.

Without Ask Izzy, people in the toughest moments of their lives will find it harder to reach the help they need. Less hope for women and children fleeing family violence, parents struggling to feed their kids and young people sleeping rough.

Organisations across the social services sector have published an open letter calling on the Prime Minister to restore the funding.

Our team were thrilled to receive a donation of 10 shelter swags from Arun, Des and Judith from the Rotary Club of Lilydale this week.

The waterproof shelter bags provide a safer and more weather-resistant option for rough sleepers, helping our frontline homelessness workers provide practical support to people experiencing homelessness.

These swags enable our teams to connect and support people sleeping rough, assist with immediate needs and help them get on track towards greater safety, stability and independence.

It’s collaboration and community partnership like this that saves lives for the people we support.

We have much to be proud of across our 50 years of service in the community.

Sitting down with many past and present staff members people who have helped to shape the present-day Anchor, you can hear the ways in which Anchor has made a difference.

We have grown so much since our roots began, and it is because of countless individuals who have come to work with the belief that anyone experiencing homelessness has the capacity to thrive and find a pathway from homelessness.

Foster Care Week puts an important spotlight on the brilliant work that Foster Carers do in supporting children to grow and thrive.

It's so good to see people's belief and dedication to young people get recognised and celebrated by the community!

For almost two decades, Anchor Kinship Carer, Sue has quietly put the needs of her family and community ahead of her own. Over the weekend, her dedication was publicly recognised when she received the Carer Award at the Tilly Aston Community Awards.

Sue has cared for her two grandchildren, Toby and Ben*, since they came into her care as young boys in 2007. Since then, she has been a constant source of love, advocacy and support as they have grown.

Anchor’s Kinship team describe Sue as an incredible carer with an inexhaustible capacity for love and care. She is also a knowledgeable and tireless advocate who understands how to navigate the child protection system to achieve the best outcomes for the boys.

When Ben’s severe disability made regular schooling difficult, Sue left her career as a chef to provide full-time care. She has continued to advocate for his participation in education, employment and the wider community.

This is what carers do best – knock down barriers, open doors, and make the connections needed change the world for the people they support. Sarah has done this consistently for 19 years.

There is no single path to becoming a foster carer.

People open their homes to children and young people for many different reasons. Some have grown up around foster care, some want to provide a safe and stable home, while others find themselves responding to a child or young person who needs somewhere safe to belong.

For Foster Care Week 2026, three Anchor foster carers shared their very different journeys to becoming foster carers.

Their circumstances were completely different, but each journey began with a willingness to open their home and provide care to a child who needed it.

“A community organisation can’t come into existence unless there’s people willing to roll their sleeves up.”

Across 50 years of history, there have been so many people come through our services who have made a difference.

This video features a board member of SHAC, one of the original organisations which formed to create Anchor in the early 2000’s.

Doug Mitchell was the board chair at the time of the Ferntree Gully office opening. We found a dusty copy of a VHS tape from 1997 which covers the opening ceremony for the office, and gives a fascinating insight into the motivation and drive of people working in the areas of homelessness and foster care during that time.

A big part of our 50th anniversary is recognising, celebrating and paying our respect to all of those who came before us to forge the present-day Anchor – one that continues to deliver on the passion and belief that so many have shared in supporting young people experiencing homelessness, and striving for outcomes for families and individuals experiencing hardship and disadvantage.

There are no individual efforts in the homelessness space.

It takes communities, local businesses, volunteers, frontline workers and supporters coming together to make a difference.

We saw that last night, and were thrilled to see a room full of community supporters gather for the Homelessness Community Fundraiser, an evening focused on connection, collaboration and supporting people experiencing homelessness in the Yarra Ranges.

Anchor organised the event alongside Stable One, Holy Fools and Yarra Ranges Council, and Ant Pitt - bringing together community members, volunteers, frontline workers and local representatives in support of people doing it tough.

Thank you to Chemist Warehouse (Chirnside), Bridget Vallence MP, Reading Cinemas (Chirnside) and Rapid Relief Team AU for your generosity in helping make the event extra special.
