Where There's A Will

Where There's A Will We exist to bring colour to young people in the Upper Hunter - building skills & resilience for life. To support and fund our schools and community.

On Christmas Day 2015, Will Carrigan, a young active member of our Upper Hunter community tragically took his own life. His passing shocked and devastated us all – he was an extremely loved, successful, athletic, hard-working young man in the prime of his life – there was no practical reason for him to be mentally unstable. It was in the wake of this tragedy that his family began to ask questions

and explore the little spoken about and often taboo topic of mental illness. The family found that, “In Australia, su***de is the leading cause of death for males and females aged between 15 and 44. In a typical year, around 2,500 people in Australia die by su***de. That's more than seven people every day”. This came as a massive surprise – for the previous 24 years they had been educating and protecting their Will from all the usual risks in life – drugs, alcohol, s*x, cars, etc., but never had anyone, either within the family or beyond, really targeted mental illness his greatest risk as an adolescent or young adult. It was this lack of mental illness awareness on an individual, family, school and community level that led to the forming of “Where There’s A Will”. The focus for the “Where There’s A Will” charity is to provide support to our community in delivering recognised mental health programs from pre-school through to Year 12. Schools are the focus of the foundation as they provide a platform where all children and adolescents within our region, irrespective of location or socioeconomic background, can be engaged in mental health learning.

“I believe that getting as many people in a community as we can who are skilled up and confident to have these conversations with young people is so important. The whole community benefits when we can discuss this kind of thing openly.”
As a leader in wellbeing at Muswellbrook High School, Marcia Williamson has seen first-hand the positive impact that Teen Mental Health First Aid training can have on students, schools and the wider community.
By equipping trusted adults with the skills and confidence to recognise, respond to and support young people experiencing mental health challenges, we can create safer and more supportive environments for our next generation.
Thanks to the generous support of , this important training can continue to be delivered in our schools, creating a ripple effect that will benefit young people, families and communities for years to come.

What are your greatest strengths? 💪

One of the most powerful tools for personal growth is understanding what makes you uniquely you. That's why we encourage young people to complete the VIA Character Strengths Survey.

The survey helps identify your top character strengths, qualities such as kindness, perseverance, leadership, creativity, gratitude and bravery and provides insight into how you naturally approach challenges, relationships and opportunities.

Research shows that when we recognise and use our strengths more often, we experience greater confidence, wellbeing, resilience and engagement in everyday life.

Taking the time to discover your strengths is a simple step that can have a lasting impact. What strengths help you shine? Visit - https://www.viacharacter.org/account/register

Building a generation that knows how to support one another 💙

Through Where there’s a Will's wellbeing initiatives, more than 3,000 Year 8 students have now completed Teen Mental Health First Aid training across the Upper Hunter.

This evidence-based program equips young people with the knowledge and confidence to recognise when a friend may be experiencing a mental health challenge, provide initial support, and connect them with a trusted adult.

By giving students the skills to look out for one another, we're helping create safer, more supportive school communities where conversations about mental health are encouraged and help-seeking is normalised.

We are incredibly proud of every student who has taken part in this training and the positive impact they continue to have on their peers, schools and communities.

“Effective leadership supports student wellbeing by promoting mindfulness and building resilience, helping everyone navigate challenges at school and in life. I am grateful to the staff and organisers for making this valuable experience possible.”
– Emily, Merriwa Central School WTAW Leader

Gratitude is one of the most common reflections we hear from our student leaders after attending the Youth Leadership Conference.

The opportunity to explore the connection between wellbeing and leadership is a powerful experience, helping young people understand how resilience, mindfulness and positive relationships contribute to effective leadership.

By bringing these insights and skills back to their schools and communities, our student leaders create a ripple effect that benefits those around them and helps build stronger, more connected communities for the future.

“This was a no brainer for AGL to support the work of Where there’s a Will. We’ve got about 500 people that work at Liddell and Bayswater Power Stations and they see first-hand the benefit of educating children in wellbeing and mental health.”

AGL Corporate Affairs Specialist Polly Yuille has seen the positive impact Where there’s a Will continues to make across the Upper Hunter community and with AGL’s ongoing support, that impact can continue to grow for local young people.

Through this valued partnership, we can continue delivering programs that create better minds, resilient leaders and brighter futures for the next generation.

Thank you again to AGL for your ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of our schools, families and communities.
