🚤🎉 WELCOME HOME RC11! 🎉🚤

What an exciting day for Coast Guard Redcliffe as we officially welcome RC11 back home to Redcliffe! 💛💙

After departing in April, RC11 has spent the past six months at Horizon Shores undergoing its final fit-out, MRQ training readiness and preparations for operational service. Today marks an exciting milestone as our newest rescue vessel returns home, ready for its next chapter of saving lives on Moreton Bay ahead of our transition to Marine Rescue Queensland! 🌊

A fantastic team effort saw five of our skippers join the team from Marine Rescue Jacobs Well for the return journey.

The voyage was also a valuable training opportunity and a chance to share knowledge and learn from other units. The trip included a little detour to Tangalooma Jetty to practise touch and go mooring and vessel handling skills aboard RC11. One of our more challenging operational areas required for medevacs.

👏 A huge thank you to everyone involved in RC11's construction, fit-out, preparation and return journey. It's been a long road to get here, and we're thrilled to see this impressive new rescue capability back at Redcliffe!

⚓ A new vessel. A new chapter. The same commitment to keeping our community safe on the water. We're looking forward to our other vessels soon joining the "RC" fleet. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.

👮‍♂️📰 From the Archives

Digging through the Coast Guard Redcliffe archives continues to uncover some fascinating pieces of our maritime history.

An article by Senior Constable John Rice looks back at 125 years of Queensland’s Water Police and the evolution of policing on our waterways.

The story stretches back to the mid-1800s, when Brisbane was still part of New South Wales and water police helped patrol Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River. It recounts an era of rowing boats, water police hulks and vessels with some iconic names.

The article also highlights just how much the role changed over the decades; from maintaining law and order and searching vessels along the river to operating increasingly capable launches as Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Queensland’s coastal communities grew.

More than just an interesting piece of Water Police history, it is a reminder of the long maritime tradition that volunteer marine rescue units became part of—different organisations and different roles, but generations of people keeping watch over Queensland's waterways.

Almost a full circle moment as volunteer marine rescue units are transitioning to Marine Rescue Queensland under the Queensland Police Service.

⛵ A Helping Hand on the Water! 🌊

Our crew was called upon to assist a yacht, helping bring the vessel safely into the marina and alongside its berth.

💬 We were delighted to receive this lovely message of thanks from the yachts skipper and crew:

"Your team's calm approach, seamanship and professionalism made what could have been a stressful situation straightforward and reassuring."

👏 A fantastic acknowledgement of the skills, teamwork and dedication of our volunteer crews, who give their time to help keep our boating community safe.

🐢 A turtley lucky escape! 🌊

Our crew came across a turtle that had become caught and tangled in a crab pot.

The crew carefully worked to cut the turtle free before releasing it back into Moreton Bay. Thankfully, it appeared none the worse for its ordeal and happily swam away! 💙

It’s always a great feeling when a rescue has a happy ending — whether it has two legs, four flippers, or a propeller! 🐢🚤

A reminder to keep an eye out for our local marine wildlife.

⚓📰 From the Archives

Another great find from the archives... a glimpse into life at Coast Guard Redcliffe in the late 1980s.

Written by then Publicity Officer Kevin Garrett, this article captures just how varied the work of volunteers was, from rescues and searches to radio operations, training and community engagement.

Some things have certainly changed since this was printed! 😄 But the underlying story remains familiar to our Facebook stories nowadays - volunteers giving their time, training and skills to help keep the boating community stay safe.

More than three decades later, this old publications provide a wonderful snapshot of the people, rescues and everyday moments.

🚤 Game changer for towing jetskis!

After seeing comments on one of our Facebook posts recommending a Craft Raft, we decided to give one a go — and wow, what a difference it makes!

We had a call about a jet ski taking on some water in the engine bay and they didn't have a tow tap, which would have meant a long precarious tow back from the Tangalooma Wrecks. With the Craft Raft, the tow was so much more efficient, timely and safer, making a long trip back a whole lot easier.

It was a beautiful (and very busy!) day out on the water, and the Craft Raft definitely earned its place on board. 🙌

And our new friend from the other side of the world has a story to tell when they get home about their adventurous beautiful day at Tangalooma and meeting the Coast Guard Redcliffe volunteers.

🚤 Transition Update ⚓

There's plenty happening behind the scenes as we continue preparing for our transition to Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) in mid- November. Our volunteers have been busy working through the many tasks.

📻 Radio Operator Training: Training is underway for our radio operators to become familiar with ActivateMRQ, the new system that will support our marine rescue operations and vessel monitoring. Thank you to Marine Rescue Jacob's Well for letting us tag along to your weekly training nights. Our radio operators are using TripWatch and ActivateMRQ alongside each other to learn to the new system.

📂 Archives & Administration: There's plenty of paperwork to work through! Our team has been busy preparing records, organising archives and completing the administrative requirements to support a smooth transition.

🤝 Working with MRQ: We've continued meeting with the MRQ transition team, who have been providing briefings, guidance and support to help our Redcliffe volunteers prepare for the changes ahead.

💪 Our Volunteers: All this preparation is happening alongside our usual operational commitments, with our crews continuing to respond to vessels in need, undertake training and keep a watchful eye over Moreton Bay.

There's still plenty of work ahead, but we're making steady progress thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the support of the MRQ team.

☎️📰 From the Archives

Going through the archives, we came across an old publication from the late 1980s featuring this fantastic snapshot of the “Sea Safety Services” along the southern Queensland and northern New South Wales coast.

Long before GPS, mobile phones and today’s modern marine communications, volunteer Coast Guard and Air-Sea Rescue units formed an important safety network for recreational boaties. The article mapped services from Bundaberg to Ballina, listing radio call signs, frequencies, operating hours, rescue vessels and the areas each unit covered.

And there among them is Redcliffe Coast Guard, providing 24-hour radio operations and marine rescue coverage across Moreton Bay.

It’s a great little piece of history. Funny how much the technology, vessels and equipment have changed, while the purpose behind the service has remained remarkably familiar... helping keep people safe on the water. ☎️⚓️🌊

🛟 New life jackets helping keep our crews safe! 🛟

A huge thank you to Aurizon and the Aurizon Community Giving Fund for supporting Coast Guard Redcliffe with funding for 25 new life jackets.

Our volunteer crews spend countless hours on the water training, responding to marine assists and helping keep our local boating community safe. Reliable, fit-for-purpose safety equipment is essential to making sure our volunteers can do what they do safely.

These new life jackets will be put to great use. They were quick to come out of the box on arrival and straight out on the boats being used!

We are incredibly grateful to Aurizon for investing in our volunteers and the safety of our community.

Thank you, Aurizon, for helping us stay safe while we help keep others safe on Moreton Bay. 💙⚓

⚓ Congratulations to our newest qualified Coxswains! ⚓

After plenty of hard work, culminating in a day and night of practical assessments, we’re pleased to celebrate our new Coxswains.

👏 Doug successfully completed his holistic assessment as Coxswain, while Maddie, Geoff and Ray successfully completed their assessments as Restricted Coxswains.

This achievement reflects not only their hard work and commitment, but also the exceptional skills and support of the many people who helped make the assessments possible.

A huge thank you to our assessors and crews who generously volunteered their time throughout the day and evening to support the assessments.

Training is at the heart of what we do, ensuring our volunteers continue to build the skills, confidence and experience needed to keep our community safe on the water.

Congratulations a fantastic achievement and well deserved! ⚓👏
