Ahead of next week’s Street Party on Thursday 22 January, we acknowledge that the day has been designated as a National Day of Mourning, and we recognise the profound grief felt by many in our community and across Australia following recent tragic events.
The Sawtell community has always believed in coming together — in good times and in difficult ones. While we pause to reflect, show respect, and acknowledge the suffering of others, we also believe that connection, kindness, and community are among the strongest ways to heal.
As a mark of respect, the Street Party will include a minute’s silence to acknowledge the National Day of Mourning and to honour those who have lost their lives.
The Street Party itself is not about ignoring loss or diminishing the seriousness of the day. It is about standing together as a community, supporting one another, and affirming the values that define us — inclusion, resilience, and the uniquely Australian way of facing hardship by looking after our neighbours.
As will be the case across the country, businesses will be open, families will be working, and communities will continue their daily lives on the 22nd. We believe that doing so respectfully, thoughtfully, and with compassion honours both those we mourn and the freedoms and way of life we seek to protect.
We encourage everyone to take a moment on the day to reflect, to be kind, and to support one another — and to come together in the spirit of community that Sawtell is known for.
