ConsciouslyCoping We're shifting what it is to be Black & Brown while living with a Mental Illness. Transparency Thursday | Documentaries

My name is Lindsay With An A of course and I am a consumer of a mental illness. From a very young age I always knew something was different, but I never knew what to call it. Once I reached the age of 12 I became extremely depressed, violently self mutilated, and anxious. I hid it very well until I was 14 years old and that's when the feeling had a name Clinical Depression, but I was still hiding.

Fast forward to the summer of 2002 I was a teenager attending college and my anxiety came back with full force, I began having debilitating panic attacks which left me hospitalized most of the time. Slowly all of the other feelings began to come back as well except this time I couldn't control them from others around me. I began having uncontrollable crying spells, nausea, joint pains, migraines, suicidal thoughts, severe mutilation, hallucinations, delusions, weight gain, and severe depression. This would lead me to the path of a Behavioral Center. Yet, I still kept painful events to myself. In 2011 I went through another depressive episode and decided I should try blogging so I started imdepressedgetoverit.com and began to discuss topics about mental illness. After a month of writing I was back in the hospital again, but I was still masking my true issues. It wasn't until a therapist in the center explained that no one will ever understand you, no one will ever feel what you feel and that is ok. You know how you feel and that is why I am here to help and a light bulb went off in my head. That's when I begin to tell my story...

is more than me telling my story, it's destigmatizing the Mentally Ill community. It's getting society to see that consumers are not all sociopaths, pedophiles, violent 'murders, crazy, or overly sexual. I want hollywood, communities, corporations and the world to know that our lives and concerns are just as important. Join me in the movement to educate the world!

MY LATEST ARTICLE:

Those of us with bipolar II exist in a complicated space. We are often labeled "high-functioning," able to engage with society in ways that appear typical. People close to us may notice changes but dismiss them as stress, offering advice that doesn't account for our diagnosis.

Internally, we understand our experiences, but externally, they are often missed.

Living with bipolar II can mean being seen as high-functioning. One advocate shares how stigma and misunderstanding hides real depressive and hypomanic symptoms.

After 4 years of " should be able to do this without a therapist like everyone else." Years of rapidly cycling through depressive and hypomanic episodes. I officially have a therapist appointment!

Life be lifing and no one can do this alone.

I officially have a therapist appointment!

I’ve been struggling, so I’m going back to group therapy.

I’ve been depressed for about 3 months. This is a culmination of school, taking care of an again parent, personal relationships, changes, ups and downs, and life. I am still taking my medication and I talked to my psychiatrist. We’re going to stay with my current dosage and see how therapy goes. I just reached out to a therapist last week. So another 30 days and we will reassess.

I had a panic attack scheduling an appointment with a male therapist. That’s just how afraid I am to open up to men. My previous therapist suggested I do the work with a male therapist, specially a black male therapist. This is going to be a journey, but I agree with my provide therapist this is definitely something I need to address.

Well everyone I’m rapidly cycling again. I just noticed it today. Le sigh. This is most likely due to inconsistent sleep patterns and added school stress.

Even with medication I still experience depressive and hypomania episodes. They just aren’t as intense as without medication. I’ll be fine, just have to monitor my symptoms. I do have an appointment already scheduled with my psychiatrist next week. Most likely we will increase Lamictal to 200mg.

Just remember I’m a girl trying to Consciously Cope!

Today is a rough day and I wanted to talk about it a little bit to let everyone know how I know his anxiety and it’s not a depressive episode or a hypomanic episode.

I also mentioned in this conversation, what are my coping mechanisms? What are my symptoms? What are my behaviors and what do I do moving forward? Is it critical for me to contact my medical care team or are there things I can do on my own to help reduce my symptoms of behavior.

Trigger Warning: Ideation

Baby since moving up to 150mg of Lamictal I feel like I am above my “normal” self. My normal baseline consist of depressive mood and I don’t want to be here. I am officially above my normal.

I can’t explain how this feels, but I can tell you this I can get things done, I am cooking, I am able to think critically and I want to engage with society.

They may call me crazy, but they won’t call me dead!
