“BAYSIDE BOULES” Petanque Club

Warmly welcomes you to join us for a game of this challenging, fun, ‘addictive’ sport and leisure activity. Petanque is a simple game which can be enjoyed by everyone. It can be a fun social activity or a competitive sport, up to world championship level. Petanque is a game you can learn to play in a few minutes. You do not have to be a supreme athlete to play petan

que and all play on equal terms, as neither age, gender nor ability matter. All that is required is an area of firm ground, a set of metal balls, called BOULES, a jack, called a COCHONNET and most importantly – a sense of fun. When played as a sport, petanque can be challenging and demanding, requiring skill, determination and perseverance. Petanque players say it is the ultimate sport – a boule in one hand and a glass of wine in the other…….

Four Bayside teams, plus two WAGs had a wonderful weekend of fun, friendship, fabulous food and brilliant games in Bicheno playing in the Bicheno Pétanque Club’s prestigious 2026 “Crayboule Trophy”…..
Where else in the world can you play pétanque and spot whales breaching in sparkling blue seas…..? Bicheno PC must have the most picturesque piste in the world…
Baysiders pitted their skills against players from Hobart, Claremont and Bicheno Petanque Club.
ALL games were played with great generosity of spirit…..There were wild howls of laughter and moans of chagrin as shots went awry…the piste was noisy with chatter, banter and good natured shyacking…….even a victory dance or two..
Secretary Jan had done an amazing job with the draw for the competition....It was ready on the white board for players to see who they were playing each round...Opposing teams found one another, sorted themselves out.....and the 'battle' was on....on the toot of the horn...
After four hard fought rounds the scorers did the maths and..... "drum roll".....two Bayside teams topped the leader's board...
Team 7 - Margi, Simon and Terry 1st
Team 10 - Martin, Sue and Jo 2nd
Team Delfatti and Team Rochester/Healy played brilliantly and placed 5th and 7th....What an outstanding effort from all Baysiders. They did the club proud.
Semi-final 1
Margi, Simon & Terry defeated Hobart's Kate, Margie & Sandy
Semi-final 2
Martin, Sue & Jo defeated Hobart's Rob, Barry & Jerome
The Grand final saw a wonderful match between two great Bayside teams...
The enthusiastic crowd cheered on both teams, in awe of the precise pointing and brilliant bombing as each point was hotly contested....And the eventual winning team, after an epic battle....Team Margi, Simon & Terry.
Congratulations to both teams....Team Martin, Sue & Jo....you certainly made Margi, Simon and Terry fight for their win.....
Nick, Jan, Tracey and your incredible team we thank you for everything you did to make the Crayboule Trophy such a wonderful success. Bayside is looking forward to the 2027 Crayboule Trophy already.....
A few photos....we're collecting more from around the traps...Watch this space....

It’s been a fun week at Bayside.
Last year our much loved Queen Liz of Taroona and all she surveys retired from her royal duties…..
When she was cleaning out the palace cupboards, as well as the sceptre, orb and Crown Jewels, she found the privy papers pertaining to Bayside, her Bayside regalia and the Royal Boules, all of which she gave, with her Royal blessing, to Bayside Boules PC. There was, however, a proviso…
The Royal Boules were to be sold, with proceeds going to the club……
Many a Bayside boule has been tapped (or whacked!) aside by the deadly accuracy of a shot from Queen Liz!
With gavel in hand Mme Treas. Sue T. ran a fast and furious ‘silent auction’. With the Delfattis first off the rank, bids came from all corners……and the top bid, at the hammer was from Teresa……Congratulations Teresa. Thank you to everyone who put in a bid…..and Thank you Queen Liz.
And here’s a very happy Teresa…..who had a ‘test run’ and found the boules…..perfect!!!

From the Bayside Executive Committee -
We are so lucky in our Bayside Pétanque Club with all our members who so readily turn up and volunteer assistance to organise and run our activities! For this Doubles Comp we especially send a big thank you to Robyn and Vanessa for scoring, timing, organising, cheerleading and looking after all players. Big thanks also to TD for his fantastic TDing, as usual, and thanks to all who helped out with preparing the piste (Simon and Margi, special shout out for raking, with help from Jarod and Jo - thanks!) and setting up (Martin - excellent job with that windshield! Who knew such a beautiful morning would become so gusty - our Martin did!). David's custom designed trophies add the touch of class we need - thanks David. And our official Club photographer Anne, did another excellent job, recording all for posterity. It's great to enjoy such a wonderful day with such an excellent group of Club members, thanks all!

And now...to the day......
It was a varied field this year for the Doubles Comp.. There were the traditional teams, long time members playing as a team for the first time, teams who just happened to be married to one another - brave indeed, a team of brand-new members and a last-minute pairing...who were just delighted to be part of the fun....
The scorers called the teams to the table to have them witness the random draw....Transparency integral to Bayside's ethos.....TD reminded members of the rules, timers were checked.....and then "Let the games begin"....
In every competition the same atmosphere prevails....before the whistle....excited chatter, banter, lots of laughs....after the whistle....silence...the click of the boules, quiet exchanges, whispered tactics, silent signals, murmured conversations....whoops of joy on taking a point.
And so it was in the Doubles as teams battled it out. There were close games where the scores went up one by one...and there were walkovers...there were games where new players gave experienced players reason to worry.....Every game was played with generosity of spirit, friendship and respect.
The four teams reaching the semi-finals were....Jo and Martin, Renato and Christina, Terry and Sue and Simon and Margi..
Congratulations everyone!!!!
The Grand final saw Margi and Simon play Sue and Terry.
It was an exciting game with many thrilling, almost impossible shots, canny tactics, yells of delight and moans of chagrin with the scores finally at 11 all.
In a blaze of glory, and to the roar of the crowd, Margi and Simon took the final two points...to be 2026 Bayside Boules Petanque Club Doubles Champions.
In a fantastic year Margi and Simon have their names on every trophy except the Doubles...and now they have this one 'in the bag'. You two are an amazing team. Congratulations from all.
Both players and the cheer squad were exhausted from the 'tension' and excitement....
Newly minted Secretary Sue H. made a gracious speech, warmly congratulating the winners and presenting the loot and the trophies....and thanking all the members who made it such a great day.

A brilliant autumnal afternoon for tossing the boule….Lots of players, lots of noise…..lots of challenges….lots of fun…..
As a special Bayside extra - because we love to ‘give back’ to our members…..The names of the women playing today were put in a lucky draw to mark Mother’s Day tomorrow……The prize? A heart shaped trinket tray filled with love heart chocolates….”Awwww ❤️”

And the winner? Bayside’s amazing VP Margi McGarry, who NEVER stops working on behalf of the club…
This could not be more perfect as Margi and her daughter Miriam are 1st time Mum and Grandma this year.
Margi thought this could become a Bayside Tradition the ‘Perpetual Mother’s Day’ lucky draw. See what I mean about always thinking of great things for the club?
Congratulations Margi……🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼

Many a member thought they were arriving in Xanadu when they turned up for Bayside’s Annual General Meeting at the Waterworks Reserve today…..
But ‘no’…….Hut number 9 was booked for “Dandu” not Xanadu…..but did we hear the Bee Gee’s voices wafting through the gums? 🎶🎶🎶

Margi and Sue T. as the ‘management’ team, jointly ran the AGM and were delighted to announce the 2026/2027 Bayside Boules Petanque Club Executive Committee.
Congratulations Execs……particularly the three new members who put up their hands to serve their club.
The highlight of the day was the announcement of three Life Members. Terry, Martin and Vanessa.
Their outstanding contributions to the club for the last twelve years were shared with the members to much cheering and applause.
The new LMs each spoke of how humbled they felt and how it was their joy and an honour to be part of such an amazing group of people, many of whom are now close friends.
While the obligatory photos were taken, much backslapping, noisy conversations, members loving being in the tree canopy, Jarod, Bayside’s BBQ master, was battling a wasp invasion, helped by some brave souls batting away the intruders as he cooked sausages to perfection….Thank you Jarod. Members partook of an excellent lunch, with the snags and then lots of delicious goodies brought by members…
So now to the new petanque year…..with plans afoot for exciting events, social fun, inter club gatherings, away trips, hours and hours of petanque, friendship, singing and dancing, food and celebrations…..Bring it on….
Thank you again Anne for the photos…

On the most beautiful Autumnal afternoon Baysiders honoured and reflected on the valour, bravery and the sacrifices our Anzacs made on the shores of Gallipoli.
And then the fun began…..As the one o’clock cannon fired teams were off pitting their skills against one another in the Anzac Goodwill Melee……

Games were played with great camaraderie, laughter, shyaking and sheer cheek…..until the end of each game drew nigh……then all was quiet as players concentrated on taking the win..
It was Anzac biscuits, a cuppa and lots of yakking all round as the score table did the sums…..
AND ……the winner of the 2026 Goodwill Trophy is…….Drum roll….
Clare Healy …Congratulations Clare. Three fantastic wins for the afternoon….Many a member is shaking at the knees as Clare comes storming through the ranks….
Lots of players won two games….Congratulations all…
2nd place - Terry with a delta score of +16.
Thank you Anne for the photos…taken as the shadows shortened and twilight settled…

Thank you to everyone who helped set up and pack up…..and to Vanessa for keeping the other scorer on the job…

And another festive greeting….too good not to share….🎄🎄🎄
