๐Ÿšœ Did you know? An estimated 9 in 10 farmers are exposed to diesel engine exhaust, a known cause of lung cancer.

Diesel engine exhaust is produced by diesel-powered vehicles, machinery and equipment used across many industries, including agriculture, transport, construction and mining. Regular exposure can increase the risk of cancer over time.

Next time your on the job, try these practical steps to help reduce exposure:

โœ… Keep vehicles and machinery well maintained
โœ… Understand the hazards and follow workplace safety guidelines

โ˜€๏ธ UV radiation is the most common occupational cancer hazard in Australia.

For people who work outdoors, exposure to UV radiation can accumulate over time and significantly increase the risk of skin cancer. The effects may not be immediate, but the damage can build up over years of exposure.

The good news? Skin cancer is one of the most preventable cancers.

Protecting your skin should be part of the daily routine for anyone working outdoors:

โœ… Wear protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses
โœ… Use SPF50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply regularly
โœ… Seek shade whenever possible
โœ… Check the UV Index and protect your skin whenever UV levels reach 3 or above

How confident are you at recognising workplace cancer hazards?

Around 40% of Australian workers aged 16-65 may be exposed to one or more known cancer-causing agents at work. Many of these exposures occur during everyday tasks and may not always be obvious.

Occupational cancers can take years, or even decades, to develop, making prevention and early awareness essential.

You may be aware that we are moving our northwest office from Best Street in Devonport to a new purpose-built facility at the Burnie Health Hub, 16 Mooreville Road. Construction is currently underway, with our new home expected to be ready by the end of December.

As part of this transition our Best Street, Devonport office will close on ๐“๐ฎ๐ž๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ” ๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ to allow a new tenant to move in. Our team will be unavailable on this day while we move.

During the transition period our staff will be working across different locations with all face-to-face support service appointments taking place at the North West Regional Hospital Wellness Centre - 23 Brickport Road, Burnie.

We will try to make this period as smooth as possible for our clients, volunteers and supporters with minimal disruption. Programs and services will continue from Wednesday 7 October, and we'll contact anyone affected by changes directly to confirm appointment times or locations.

If you are a female aged 50 - 74 years, BreastScreen Australia will send out a reminder every 2 years for a FREE Mammogram. For those 40 - 49 or over 74, you are still eligible every 2 years, you just wont recieve active invites any more.

This October, we're supporting National Safe Work Month and helping raise awareness of the importance of safe and healthy workplaces for everyone.

The 2026 theme, Safe Work is for Life, reminds us that work should never come at the cost of our health, wellbeing, or ability to enjoy life outside of work. Everyone deserves to return home safely.

Throughout the month, we'll be focusing on occupational cancer prevention and exploring:

โœ… The most common workplace carcinogens in Australia
