Last night we hosted our Teen Nutrition Workshop at Sandringham Life Saving Club, bringing together our young patrollers, members and friends from other clubs for a fantastic session on nutrition, fuelling and looking after our bodies.

A huge thank you to Isobel Cotham, Graduate Researcher from Deakin University’s Faculty of Health / School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, for sharing her knowledge in such a practical, engaging and age-appropriate way.

Izzy covered how nutrition supports energy, training, recovery and performance, along with the basics of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and hydration. She also shared practical tips on what to eat before, during and after exercise, recognising signs of under-fuelling, nutrition considerations for girls and the menstrual cycle, and simple ways to support immunity and injury recovery.

It was wonderful to see so many young lifesavers engaged in the session and asking great questions. These are the sorts of opportunities that help support our young members not only as patrollers and athletes, but as healthy, confident young people.

Thank you to everyone who came along, and to those who helped make the evening happen!

Don't forget that we have organised for a sports nutritionist from Deakin University to talk to our younger members about nutrition and fuelling tomorrow!

The session will be hosted at Sandy LSC Clubhouse on Friday 29th May at 6.30pm for approximately 1 hour.

The session is open to anyone, but is particularly focussed towards 14-18 year olds. You are more than welcome to share this with your friends, you do not have to be a member of our life saving club to attend.

Please register via our linktree (www.linktr.ee/sandringhamlsc) or just come along!

We’ll cover:
• How nutrition impacts energy, training, recovery, and performance
• The basics of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and hydration
• What to eat before, during, and after exercise
• Recognising signs of under-fuelling and when your body needs more
• Nutrition considerations for girls and the menstrual cycle
• Simple strategies to support immunity and injury recovery

Hope to see you or your teen there!

We are so proud of Charlee-Faith for joining us this season!! ♥️💛

We are so proud of Charlee-Faith for joining us this season!! ♥️💛

She’s 13 years old and has already completed more than 130 patrol hours as a volunteer lifesaver.

What’s more, she racked up all those hours in her first patrol season!

Charlee-Faith joined Sandringham Life Saving Club at the end of 2024. Her parents saw it as a good opportunity for her to learn water safety skills.

After a season of Nippers, she stepped up to get her Surf Rescue Certificate in December last year so she could take part in patrols. Since then, Sandringham LSC has become “another home”.

“I was down there almost every weekend. I did four days at the end of the season for the long weekend,” she said.

“I really love it. I love going to lifesaving!”

A desire to help her community, and the exploits of the famed Bondi Beach lifeguards, inspired her to get involved.

“I grew up really loving Bondi Rescue,” she said.

“When I turned 13, I could do my SRC. I wanted to learn more skills as a medic and help people too.”

On top of her patrolling, Charlee-Faith has provided water safety to Nippers, and took part in an extended course on CPR to sharpen her skills further.

She hopes to use what she’s learned in lifesaving to make an even bigger contribution in the future.

“I would really love to be a paramedic or a surgeon, or go further with my lifesaving,” she said.

If you’ve ever thought about joining lifesaving, this could be your year to volunteer.
