Finally the sun is here and we are gearing up for a big week of work at the Sandgate RSL Sub Branch.

Last week we had the pleasure of having Bisma Asif MP and Bart Mellish MP around and showing what we have planned for the garden.

We are also looking forward to seeing everyone at our Social Night, this Friday, June 5 from 5pm!

A quick update as it was too wet for work for the first three days of the week. We now have a fence along the side with drainage and arbor (vertical garden) frame. Next week we will start to see the construction of garden beds.

It's looking good so far! What do you think?

At 19 Sybil Brady (nee Beck) was formally enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force and was quickly recruited into the nation’s top-secret service.

This unit was called the Central Bureau: Australia’s "Bletchley Park" in WWII.

This network included high-level code-breaking, daring behind-the-lines reconnaissance, and covert sabotage missions.

They were Australian code-breakers who mastered deciphering Japanese army and air force codes.

Her family was recently presented with the War Medal 1939-1945, known as the Commonwealth WWII Victory Medal, and the Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 at Sandgate RSL Sub Branch Inc. as researched by Jim Lakey and presented by John Anderson.

Read the full story in this week's Sandgate Guide

Check out these photos of Sybil from the Australian War Memorial collections. Including her with the big Central Bureau group and another smaller group photo taken during a WAAAF training course.

Four days into the project and the site is almost cleared and the flooding mystery is hopefully solved!

The team of ex service people from Evo Landscapes, TAE Construction Industries and Dig Deep H**e and services along with Brizzy Plumbing and Gas, worked through the rain this week to keep project on track.

"Like working in the field," the ex servicemen said.

They found one of the Sub Branch building drainpipes that was never connected to the stormwater and this would have contributed to our previous water inundation issues.

This will be fixed along with the side fence. The team will also inspect and clear all drains and install sub soil drainage.

The concrete slab that the old water tank sat on is 250-300mm thick requiring extra tools and rock breaker attachment and some heavy work from the lads.

They intend to have the site fully cleared soon so that construction can start next week.

We hope you're enjoying the updates.

Dig into this project update!

Evo Landscapes construction team (all ex servicemen) have commenced the veterans garden project today.

This will transform the lower side of the Sub Branch and entrance from the carpark between The Sands Social and Sandgate Magistrates Court.

Sub Branch staff will be working from home this week while machinery and concrete cutting occurs.

A special thank you to Helen Bishop for helping us obtain the Premiers Honouring our Veterans Grant. Along with Paul Harris who will be Sub Branch's project manager.

We hope to have works finished within 4 weeks with an official opening ceremony second half of the year.

This week we were very proud to be a part of the ANZAC Day jersey launch for the Hostplus Cup.

Our very own Matt Mancini presented jerseys to the Dolphins NRL team and spoke about the importance of the ANZAC spirit and teamwork on the field and in the field.
