About the event
This is a free, practical, science-backed open day designed to empower local landholders, bush-lovers and carers to manage invasive vines.

Cat’s claw creeper and madeira vine are two of the most aggressive and destructive weeds in South East Queensland - smothering native vegetation, weakening creek banks, and reducing the long term resilience of private land. But landholders in Samford don’t have to tackle them alone. PRCA, in partnership with EcoInsects, Healthy Land & Water, Land for Wildlife and Seqwater, invites you to a practical, science backed open day designed to empower local landholders with the knowledge, tools and support needed to manage invasive vines more effectively.
What you’ll experience
• A guided look inside the Samford Biological Control Facility
• Demonstrations of biological control agents and how they fit into long term management
• Practical, on ground control techniques you can apply on your own property
• Insights into how coordinated catchment care strengthens the entire Samford landscape
• Opportunities to connect with experts, neighbours and support programs
Why it matters
Cat’s claw and madeira vine don’t just impact individual properties - they spread across boundaries, waterways and wildlife corridors. This workshop brings together leading organisations to help landholders understand the bigger picture and adopt holistic, sustainable approaches that protect biodiversity and improve property health over time.

Here is a fantastic local event for the whole family to visit local gardens, learn about sustainable gardening practices and to discover how to easily grow your own food at your home. The Samford Edible Garden Trail is a community initiative to encourage and inspire people to grow their own food and how to start doing it. Over the weekend of 17/18 May 2025 the most inspiring edible gardens in Samford and surrounding areas will open their gates to everyone. You can view and learn about permaculture designs 🍓 swales 🥑 raised garden beds 🍋 compost bays 🥬 square-foot gardening 🥒 fruit tree guilds 🌶️ orchards 🌽 annuals 🥕 perennials 🍠 arches 🍇 domes 🍉 chicken houses 🥦 fruit🍍 and syntropic farming. Thank you to the many Samford community members who visited our Samford Landcare marquee in the Samford Parklands today, as we promoted the Clean Up Australia event alongside the Samford Parkrun. David and Christine distributed lots and lots of bags for people to walk their local areas and collect any rubbish, to keep our community as clean as possible. Our hero of the day was Daniel who ran one of the fastest times of the day, then took a bag and walked around the start finish area collecting rubbish - that is gold community spirit!

Enjoy our final planting session before the big chill sets in and we take a rest until Spring.
Volunteers are welcome to assist at our next Samford Landcare site session which will be this Sunday 16 June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at the Cash Ave North site alongside the Samford Creek and the Samford Scout Group.
Our tasks will be:
- Adding plants to our Scout Trails Garden Project
- Removing some of Samford’s most common weeds and spreading mulch on the paths
Please bring:
- Protective clothing for arms and legs, a good hat, gloves, sunscreen, water and snacks
- Tools for removing weeds and small shrubs and planting tools if you have them
If you are bringing children with you (plenty of tasks), please ensure they are always under your supervision.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Samford Landcare site session yesterday. We managed to do more than we hoped for - weeding, planting, path maintenance and mulching. All because we had some wonderful people volunteer their time to make a piece of our Samford creekside environment even more special. Thank you volunteers and you can look forward to seeing the new plants grow in the years ahead!

The 'Scout Trails Garden' project between Cash Avenue North and the Samford Creek is progressing well and is already such an improvement over what was a very overgrown land area. The Samford Village Pump ran an article on 9 June 2023 about the progress so far. We've got plenty left to do so more Samford Landcare activity is ahead! Thank you to everyone who has supported this project so far.
