April 1 is fast approaching which this year means a screening at the Sale Film Society (no joke!)

Balloon from 2018 is a German thriller drama. It depicts the true story of a crossing of the inner German border, by two families, from Eastern to Western Germany in a self made hot air balloon in 1979.

It’s an amazing story and excellent film so come along and see for yourself!

Screenings start at 7:30 at the Wedge. 🎥

"Kate Winslet is remarkable as model turned war photographer Lee Miller" - Wendy Ide Guardian newspaper.

Our next film is “Lee” the story of a female photographer Lee Miller during WWII

It was premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023 and well received.

Lee tells her life story to an interviewer and it is depicted in a series of flashbacks.

In 1937 she is a fashion model and aspiring photographer living a bohemian life in France.

She moves to London with her partner as the war begins and gains employment with “Vogue” during the war.

Britain had barred women serving near combat but when the US enters the war she is assigned as a war correspondent.

She shoots some of the most poignant photos of the war.

The movie took some eight years to make and funding was precarious.

On one occasion ,Kate Winslet who produced the film and played Lee, had to pay the entire crew and cast’s salary for a fortnight!

We hope to see you Wednesday March 4 at 7:30pm.

Whilst the restaurant is closed the bar will be open and drinks can be purchased there

Just a reminder that our first film of the year screens on Wednesday February 4 at 7:30.

EL47 is a Spanish film based on events in Barcelona in the 1970s.

Fed up with Barcelona City Council claiming that public transport couldn't reach the Torre Baró district because the streets were too narrow and unsafe, Manolo Vital, a local resident and bus driver for the city's public transport service, set out to show, from behind the wheel of the route 47 bus - "El 47"- that the authorities were wrong. 'El 47' is the inspiring true story of a man, a bus and a neighborhood's fate.

The film tells the story of Barcelona's Torre Baró neighborhood, but it is also that of many other communities formed in the 50s by immigrants who settled on the outskirts of Spain's main cities. In many cases, they lived in dwellings built with their own hands after having had to leave their land to carve out new lives far from home. Years later, in the 1970s, many of these neighborhoods were still not considered part of the city and lacked running water, electricity and other basic amenities.

Our next movie is fast approaching....(Touch, Iceland, 2024)

It opens in the late 1960’s with Kristofer, a young Icelander, studying at the London School of Economics. However he drops out and applies as a dishwasher at a Japanese restaurant where he meets and falls in love with Miko the daughter of the chef - Takahashi. He in turn begins training Kristofer as a chef.

Miko confides to him that her family was originally from Hiroshima and her mother was pregnant at the time of the bombing. Because of discrimination in Japan as Hibakusha they moved to the UK.

Fast forward 50 years Kristofer is now a widower in Iceland suffering from early dementia. His doctor suggests he should resolve unfinished business and he returns to London.

Hope to see you on Wednesday November 12 at 7:30. 😀
