Our student scholarships help give young people access to education they might not otherwise have. That support doesn’t just change things for individual students - it also helps strengthen families and creates more opportunities across the wider community.

We believe education is one of the most important building blocks for East Timor’s future. In Lospalos, funding education can make a real long-term difference by giving young people the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to help shape the future of their community.

In case you missed it, National Volunteer Week wrapped up last week 🤗

Mornington Peninsula Friends of Lospalos is run completely by volunteers, and we’re lucky to have such a generous community behind it.

To everyone who gives their time and effort, thank you!

Last week there was significant flooding in Lospalos, Timor-Leste, with many families losing basic household items and supplies.

To assist the community, Friends of Lospalos has sent $1,500 in emergency assistance to help replace essentials like rice, cooking oil, and school supplies that were damaged in the floods.

Flooding is a regular challenge in Timor-Leste, especially during and around the monsoon season. Heavy rain and limited infrastructure can make things really difficult for communities very quickly, particularly in rural areas like Lospalos.

As always, we can only provide this kind of support because of the generosity of our community of supporters. If you'd like to support us with any donations, you can do so at https://hubs.ly/Q04hr2kq0 ❤️

UNICEF has identified education as a key priority for Timor-Leste, especially in rural communities like Lospalos, where many children still have limited access to schooling (https://hubs.ly/Q04d80V10).

Friends of Losplos has had this as a consistent pillar of focus over the years, where we have provided a number of scholarships for students to undergo teacher training in Dili, which they would have otherwise not been able to access.

As well as recently supporting Azenfina and Erfina as they commence their fourth year, we have just approved the support of an additional student, Elfinana do Ceu, on her scholarship.

If you're in a position to support these students in this important initiative, we'd love any donations at https://hubs.ly/Q04d7-1F0

Did you know that the name 'Lospalos' is derived from the Fataluku name 'Lohoasupala' (Fataluku being a local Papuan language), now often shortened to 'Lospala'.

The preferred spelling is 'Lospalos', even though it’s often mistaken internationally as the Spanish-sounding 'Los Palos'.

Timor-Leste is a country rich in language, culture and identity 🇹🇱

Did you know there are two national languages?
Tetum - an Austronesian language influenced heavily by Portugese, widely spoken across the country.
Portuguese - used in government, education, and law.

You’ll also hear English and Indonesian, which are widely used as working languages, alongside many local languages spoken across different communities.

If you're lucky enough to visit Timor, it's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in these different languages!

Exciting news!

Two students supported by the Friends of Lospalos David and Patricia Ball Scholarship have successfully completed the third year of their teacher training at Baucau Teachers College (ICFP).

Over the past three years, they have studied teaching methods and completed supervised classroom practice. They are now beginning their fourth year, working in schools while gaining further practical experience through mentoring and supervision.

This final year will help strengthen teaching quality and support qualified teachers to return to, and remain in, their home districts, including rural communities. The qualification is also recognised overseas.

Thanks to the Mornington Peninsula Friends of Lospalos community for the continued support that makes this happen 🤗
