This is what the Pacific Islands Council of Qld Inc. (PICQ) has always been about from the outset since it started its journey in August 2008. It has not changed since. For over a century, Pac

ific Islanders have been actively contributing to the Australian way of life. The desire to increase this involvement as well as improve the conditions of life for all Pacific communities living in Queensland, and more broadly, Australia, continues to grow. The Pacific Islands Council of Qld Inc. consists of members, across various congregations, who are well informed of the needs and capacities of Pacific Communities. We recognise that in order to achieve our full potential as Pacific Communities, we need to engage with the government at all levels, peer community organisations and the business community alike. We feel that our knowledge, skills, attitudes, history and aspirations can enhance not just the life of Pacific people, but the life of every Australian. The PICQ Committee sees the future as one where we are recognised as active contributors and shapers of community culture by sharing our rich heritage and our positive outlook on life. While we recognise there are challenges affecting our community, ranging from health to education and employment, we are confident that our entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative approach can create a better society in the future. Our high participation in work, our compassionate and generous natures, and long historical association with Australia showcase some of our strengths for building that future. We invite you to travel with us as we continue to write our story of growth, engagement, change, exploration, challenge and achievement.

Congratulations to the Manawise Group on achieving HSQF accreditation!

We’re proud to announce that MANAWISE Care has been granted a Human Services Quality Framework license for child safety service provision in Queensland.

Since we started delivering child safety services in mid-2022 licensing has been a key goal for our organisation. The process for licensing has required every team member past and present to commit to providing high quality care to our most vulnerable so we thank everyone who has contributed to this key milestone.

This is just the start and we look forward to partnering with families, communities and stakeholders for better outcomes for our precious children.

To every person, purpose. To every life, legacy. 🛶✈️🚀

MANAWISE Group is a community advancement firm with MANAWISE Care providing one part of our holistic model which includes research, consulting, education, labour hire, cultural initiatives and community services across Australia and the Pacific. Vi’ia le Ali’i 🙏🏽

The Circular Economy for Island Resilience course is an 8-week online programme building implementation capability for practitioners in island and coastal jurisdictions.

Participants work through case studies across food systems, tourism, water, construction, energy, and more, examining how island economies can shift from 'take-make-waste' systems to regenerative models that reduce import dependence and support local enterprise. Esteemed circular economy practitioners will lead the weekly live sessions.

Enrolment is open: https://www.islandinnovation.co/programmes/course

PICQ is grateful to the PNG Labour Mobility Unit (PNGLMU) for the invitation to attend and present the Queensland Community Connections Program at the PNG Labour Mobility and PNG Diaspora Partnership Forum in Brisbane on 6–7 June 2026 under the theme: “One People, One Purpose – Making PNG Workers Fit for Work.”

The two-day forum brought together approximately 50 members of the Papua New Guinean diaspora, along with key stakeholders, including the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), Approved Employers, service providers, community leaders, and welfare partners.

The forum provided a valuable platform to strengthen collaboration, share experiences, and identify practical actions to better support the well-being and success of PNG workers participating in Australia’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme (PALM).

There is a need for more conversation on the pros and cons of deep sea mining. The Manu Folau during the State of the Pacific Ocean Convening now happening in Suva raises the fact that deep sea mining and how it is dividing the Pasifika household resembles a deep seated colonialism that comes from within the Pacific itself.

More than 8,000 Tuvaluans, most of the nation's approximately 11,000 residents, have applied for the Falepili Mobility Visa, the world's first climate-linked migration pathway, which allows a limited number of islanders to live and work in Australia each year; only 280 visas were available in the first cohort. The pathway was established under the 2023 Falepili Union treaty, under which Australia pledged millions towards climate adaptation and critical services, but also secured influence over some of Tuvalu's future bilateral agreements. Tuvalu's former prime minister Enele Sopoaga, now in opposition, described the arrangement as a "sellout" and a neocolonial imposition on a smaller partner, warning the deal risks becoming a brain drain on the country's most trained workers. But Tuvalu is not limiting its response to migration.

The Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project (TCAP) is building new land from the lagoon using sand dredging and geotextile ring structures, raising ground beyond the islands' current 4.5-metre maximum elevation. Climate Change Minister Hon. Dr Maina Vakafua Talia, standing on the newly raised land, said it was time "to condemn the notion of being called climate refugees", framing the migration pathway as a deliberate choice and a return option, not a farewell. In Melbourne, home to Tuvalu's largest Australian diaspora, community leaders are working to preserve language and culture for those making the crossing. "We don't want to go," said Tabangali Elisala, a single mother who migrated for her son's future.
