Humanitarian Crisis Fundraiser for the recent floods and landslides in Sri Lanka resulting from Cyclone Ditwah.
A message from Eighty Club President, Esther Knower:
Dear Members and Friends,
As you are no doubt aware, a humanitarian crisis has developed in Sri Lanka over recent weeks following widespread heavy rain and landslides across the island in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah. It has been described it as the ‘largest and most challenging natural disaster in the country’.
There has been little Sri Lankan news in the media recently, here is the latest United Nations Sri Lanka Situation Report, detailing the impact of Cyclone Ditwah on communities across the island, including the government’s responses and interventions made by the international community.
Cyclone Ditwah made a landfall on 28 November 2025 causing widespread landslides and flooding, which is one of Sri Lanka’s worst flood disasters in 20 years.
• Approximately 2.2 million people were affected in all 25 districts.
• More than 100,000 houses have been reported fully or partially damaged, and over 230,000 people were displaced at the peak of the emergency.
• On 29 November 2025, the President of Sri Lanka declared a nationwide State of Emergency in response to the severe impacts of Cyclone Ditwah and simultaneously, requested for immediate disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.
• On 11 December 2025, under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator, the humanitarian community launched the Humanitarian Priorities Plan targeting 658,000 of the most vulnerable people out of the 1.2 million in need of humanitarian assistance, with a funding requirement of US$35.3 million.
• The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocated $4.5 million to support urgent life-saving assistance in the most affected areas.
The Eighty Club Melbourne launched a fund-raising appeal at our recent December function, which was generously initiated by our Patron Dr. David De La Harpe; that night we raised close to $3,000. We have decided to partner with two reputable charity organisations in Sri Lanka, namely Lions Club International Sri Lanka and Affinity Foundation to ensure proper distribution of relief measures.
ECM has committed $10,000 from club funds to this relief effort.
I appeal to you to contribute generously to this relief effort to ensure speedy and much needed assistance to as many needy persons as possible.
