🧼🐱 LET’S TALK LITTER TRAYS!

One of the easiest ways to keep your cat happy is to keep their toilet area clean.

Cats are naturally clean animals and many don’t like using a dirty tray.

Try to:

🧹 Scoop regularly
🧽 Clean the tray regularly
🌿 Avoid heavily scented products
📍 Keep trays somewhere quiet and accessible
🐱 Have enough trays for the number of cats in your household

A commonly recommended starting point is one litter tray per cat, plus one extra.

At Hills Cat Rescue we use Fit Litter!

If your cat suddenly starts toileting outside the litter tray, don’t assume they’re being naughty. It can be caused by stress, environmental changes or medical problems, so a vet check may be needed.

Try slow blinking back!

Cats often use relaxed facial expressions and slow blinking as part of friendly social communication.

When your cat is relaxed, look at them softly, slowly close your eyes and then open them again.

Don’t stare intensely.

Just…

And wait.

Your cat might blink back!

It’s a beautiful little way of communicating with a cat on their terms. 🤍

Although some cats will simply stare at you afterwards because they are clearly the superior species.

Even indoor cats can escape.

A door gets left open.

A fly screen doesn’t quite close.

Someone accidentally leaves the gate open.

And suddenly your beloved cat is outside.

A microchip gives lost pets a much better chance of being identified and reunited with their family.

But there’s an important step people sometimes forget…

Keep your contact details up to date!

If you move house, change your phone number or change ownership of your pet, make sure their microchip registration details are updated.

A microchip only works if the information attached to it is current. 🤍

Looking for your new furry best friend? Or need to get your pet microchipped? Come and see us at PetO Northmead! 🐱🤍

Hills Cat Rescue is joining PetO Northmead for a special Free Microchipping & Adoption Day, and we’ll have beautiful rescue cats looking for their forever homes. 🏡✨

Among the cats looking for their families will be Chloe, a gorgeous calico DSH, and Smudge, a handsome tuxedo DMH. 🐾

🥕🐱 CAN CATS EAT VEGETABLES?

Some cats can enjoy tiny amounts of certain plain, cooked vegetables as an occasional treat.

Examples can include:

🥕 Carrot
🎃 Pumpkin
🫛 Peas
🥦 Broccoli
🥒 Cucumber

But cats are obligate carnivores, meaning meat and animal based nutrition are essential to their diet.

Vegetables should never replace their complete cat food.

And there are foods you should NEVER give cats, including onion, garlic and foods containing them.

When in doubt, check with your vet before introducing something new.

Because your cat may also decide the vegetable is disgusting despite watching you eat it for 15 minutes. 😂

Smudge is a gorgeous Domestic Medium Hair tuxedo boy currently located in Rouse Hill, and he is hoping his forever family is out there looking for him too. 🥹🐾

With his beautiful tuxedo markings and fluffy coat, Smudge is definitely a handsome little guy who deserves a home of his very own.

🐾 WHY DOES MY CAT MAKE BISCUITS? 🐾

The little paws.

The rhythmic pushing.

The intense concentration.

And sometimes… straight into your stomach. 😂

When cats knead, they’re displaying a behaviour that begins when they’re kittens. Kittens knead against their mum while nursing.

Adult cats may continue kneading when they feel comfortable, relaxed and safe.

So when your cat climbs onto your lap and starts making biscuits, it’s often a pretty good sign that they’re feeling happy and secure. 🤍

They may also knead their favourite blanket or bed before settling down.

And if those claws are a little enthusiastic?

A blanket between you and the biscuits is perfectly acceptable. 😂🐾
