Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies are made special by the sound of a live bugler playing The Last Post... but across our region, there’s a growing shortage of musicians willing and confident to step forward.

To help address this, East Gippsland Music is hosting a free Last Post Workshop, designed to give more local musicians the skills and confidence to volunteer at commemorative services.

The Last Post Workshop will be hosted at Picnic Point Hall Band Room in Bairnsdale at 1pm on Saturday, March 14, with a follow-up session to be hosted on Saturday, March 28.

The workshop will be led by retired defence musician and experienced music educator Bill Vincent, who brings 36 years of professional experience.

Participants will learn how to play The Last Post, Reveille and Rouse, along with practical guidance on managing nerves, presentation on the day, and how to observe the minute’s silence with confidence.

Open to Grade 5 primary students through to adults from East Gippsland and Wellington Shire, the sessions are free, with snacks provided thanks to support from the Bairnsdale RSL.

If you play trumpet or cornet, or know someone who does, please share this opportunity.

To mark 60 years of the Australian Forces Overseas Fund (AFOF), we are recruiting 20 RSL members to undertake the Main Range Walk in Kosciuszko National Park.

We will be walking in honour of our deployed ADF personnel, who serve in challenging and unfamiliar environments, away from home and family, to acknowledge the commitment and sacrifice they make on Australia’s behalf and to raise funds to continue supporting their morale and wellbeing.

I recently posted an Open Letter to Members, and it generated more feedback than anything else I wrote. Well, two words did: “Contemporary veterans.”

Some members told me they dislike the phrase. Others said it feels ill-defined. A few worried it creates an “us and them” divide.

So, I want to clarify what I meant, plainly.

“Contemporary” is not a rank. It is a reminder: veterans keep coming - new service, new transitions, new burdens and the RSL must be ready for them without forgetting who built this League.

This is a practical challenge: how we remain relevant and welcoming to each new generation of veterans and their families.

What I hear across generations is remarkably consistent. People want:
✔️genuine mateship
✔️practical support
✔️belonging without gatekeeping
✔️the opportunity to serve their community in wide range of ways

The answer is not replacing one generation with another. It is making space where a Korean veteran can yarn with a Navy veteran from the Middle East, and both feel they belong - alongside those (like me) who served through the “dry years” of the 1980s and 1990s.

That is the RSL at its best, and it is already happening in sub-branches across the country.

Here’s a question:
What is one thing the RSL can do - nationally or locally - to ensure any veteran, from any era, can walk into a sub-branch and feel welcome on day one?

(If you’re comfortable, share an example of what worked in your sub-branch - or what got in the way - so others can learn from it.)

On this day in 2014 Operation Slipper, Australia's contribution to the war in Afghanistan, came to an end.

All three services, the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force contributed to the operation with approximately 40,000 Australians serving in the war. 47 Australians are named on the Roll of Honour as having lost their lives in the conflict while countless others suffered physical and mental injuries.

RSL Victoria thanks all those who served in Afghanistan for their sacrifice and the sacrifice of the families they left behind.

The primary role of RSL Victoria is now, and always has been, to support veterans and their families, advocate for their rights and remember those who gave their lives for their country.

We wish all Victorians a Happy New Year and hope for a better year ahead.
