It’s not just about your dog listening to you — it’s about creating a relationship where you both feel confident, comfortable and connected.

This photo is such a beautiful example of that confidence. Dogs calmly holding their positions, handlers trusting their dogs to stay where they’ve been asked, and everyone giving each other the space to succeed. No tension. No micromanaging. Just trust. 🥰

Confidence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through patience, consistency, communication and countless little moments where you show your dog, “I’ve got you, and you’ve got me.”

And sometimes, the biggest sign of progress isn’t what your dog can do when you’re right beside them… it’s what they can do when you take a few steps away. 💕🐶

That’s okay too! If you have a passion for dogs, a willingness to learn, and want to help others, we can work with you and help you develop your skills.

You don’t need to know everything — passion, commitment and a willingness to learn are what matter most!🙌

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, build confidence, learn from our existing team and help us continue to grow our club and support our members and their dogs.

🐾 Impulse Control: One of the Most Important Skills Your Dog Can Learn 🐾

Teaching your dog impulse control isn't about stopping them from having fun—it's about helping them make better choices, even when they're excited!

Whether it's waiting politely at a gate, resisting the temptation to chase a bird, staying calm when greeting people, or waiting for permission before grabbing a treat, impulse control builds the foundation for a safe, well-mannered, and confident dog.

The best part? You can practise it in everyday life:
🐶 Wait before going through doors.
🦴 Ask for a sit before meals or treats.
🎾 Pause before chasing a toy.
👋 Reward calm behaviour around distractions.

Remember, impulse control is like a muscle—the more your dog practises, the stronger it becomes. Start with easy challenges, celebrate the small wins, and gradually increase the difficulty.

A dog that can think before they act is a dog that's ready to succeed in almost any situation. 💙

👀 **The Power of Calm Observation** 🐾

One of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog isn't a sit, drop, or stay—it's learning to simply **observe the world calmly**.

Many dogs think they need to react to everything they see: another dog, a jogger, birds, bikes, children playing, or even leaves blowing in the wind. By rewarding your dog for calmly watching these things without feeling the need to investigate, bark, lunge, or become overexcited, you're helping them build confidence and self-control.

Calm observing teaches your dog that not everything requires a response. They learn that it's perfectly okay to look, process what's happening, and then return their attention to you.

🌿 Find a comfortable spot with enough distance from distractions.
🐶 Allow your dog to watch the world at their own pace.
🎉 Reward calm behaviour with treats, praise, or quiet encouragement.
⏳ Keep sessions short and finish while your dog is still relaxed.

Agility isn't just for Border Collies flying over jumps! 🐕✨

At Peninsula Positive Paws Dog Club, we love incorporating agility equipment into our training for dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. While we're not an agility club, using tunnels, low jumps, wobble equipment and other obstacles is a fantastic way to build confidence, improve body awareness, encourage focus and strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Our equipment is used as part of our obedience training to help dogs learn to think, listen and work as a team with their handler. It's also a great introduction for anyone who might like to explore agility in the future, without the pressure of a competition environment.

Whether your dog is big, small, young or simply loves trying new things, there's something incredibly rewarding about watching them tackle new challenges and grow in confidence. 💙

Have you ever wondered why we spend so much time at training encouraging your dog to focus on you?

The answer is simple: engagement is the foundation of everything we do.

Before we can teach reliable sits, stays, recalls, or loose lead walking, we need our dogs to want to work with us and pay attention to us. That's why you'll often see our instructors encouraging handlers to reward check-ins, celebrate focus, and make training fun.

A dog that is engaged with their handler is more likely to make good choices, ignore distractions, and respond to cues when it matters most. By building engagement, we're not just training behaviours—we're strengthening the relationship between dog and handler.

Every time your dog chooses to look at you instead of another dog, a bird, or an interesting smell, they're practising making the right decision. Those small moments add up to big successes both on and off the training field.

Five years ago, a small group of passionate dog lovers came together with one goal — to create a dog club built on kindness, community, and positive reinforcement training. What started in 2021 as a dream around a kitchen table has grown into an incredible community of members, instructors, volunteers, and dogs of all shapes and sizes.

From our founding members taking a leap of faith during the uncertainty of COVID, to finding our training grounds, building lifelong friendships, and helping countless handlers create stronger relationships with their dogs — it has been an amazing journey.

Peninsula Positive Paws Dog Club was created to offer modern, science-based, reward-focused training in a welcoming and supportive environment where both dogs and handlers can learn, grow, and most importantly… have fun together. ❤️

Over the past 5 years we’ve welcomed so many wonderful members into our club family, watched puppies grow into confident companions, celebrated achievements big and small, and built a community we are incredibly proud of.

To everyone who has supported us along the way — our members, instructors, supporters, and of course the dogs — THANK YOU. None of this would have been possible without you.

Here’s to celebrating how far we’ve come and to many more years of wagging tails, muddy paws, laughter, learning, and friendship. 🐶✨

Sniff happens… and we LOVE it 🐾👃

Did you know that letting your dog stop and sniff isn’t just them being “distracted” — it’s actually one of the best forms of enrichment you can give them? Scent work taps into your dog’s natural instincts, helping to build confidence, reduce stress, and mentally tire them out (sometimes even more than a big walk!).

From nervous pups gaining confidence to high-energy dogs learning to focus, sniffing is a superpower we’re big fans of. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog as you learn to work together as a team.
