With the warmer weather beginning, please be aware that snakes are starting to make an appearance. Today we attended a home in Palmerston Rd, Mt Druitt for a “snake in house” incident. Hiding behind a cupboard in the laundry was a red belly black snake. It was captured and released into bushland.
FRNSW has some stations that undertake this service using qualified personnel, trained to handle snakes safely. Sydney stations include Ropes Crossing, Blacktown, Regentville, Menai, Campbelltown, Bundeena and Warragamba.
Please note that Snake handlers may not always be 'on-shift' or available to assist. It is best to call the station.
If it is life threatening, please call 000 immediately.
Our Comms centre will either assign the call to a station, advise you to call WIRES or a private snake catcher. It will depend on the situation.
FRNSW do not charge for this service.
If we attend and do catch a snake, we will identify it and see if it is injured. If it is, we will liaise with WIRES.
If it is an introduced species, we will also contact WIRES as we cannot legally release it once caught.
If the snake is a local and in good health, we will release it back into a suitable location (bushland) within a certain distance from where it was captured. We like to release them well away from houses and near a water source.
Finally, if you see a snake, stay away from it. Keep an eye on it if you can and remember, they are probably more scared of you than you are of them.
Please do not harm them.
Call either 000, FRNSW Stations, our friends at WIRES, or a private snake handler.
