Today we remember Professor Richard Scolyer AO, a valued member of the parkrun community who walked, ran and volunteered at our events on 288 occasions. Richard’s home event of GreenWay parkrun in Sydney shared this lovely tribute:

Today, we mourn an extraordinary human being. Richard was many things: a world-leading cancer researcher, Australian of the Year, an amazing athlete, and a man whose courage inspired millions.

At GreenWay parkrun, we were fortunate to have Richard as one of our parkrun community. Richard always encouraged others to ‘have a crack’, and watching him live his life with such joy and enthusiasm inspired so many of us to do the same. We were there to celebrate Richard’s 250th parkrun with him, alongside hundreds of family, friends and his parkrun community.

What stands out most for us is his humility. His kindness. His generosity of spirit. His ability to bring hope to others, even while facing his own adversity. We feel incredibly privileged to have been part of Richard's journey, and that Richard was part of ours.

Our thoughts and love are with Katie, Emily, Matt and Lucy, Richard's wider family, and the many friends, colleagues, patients and fellow runners whose lives were touched by this remarkable man.

Thank you, Richard, for your friendship, your inspiration, your courage and your example.

You will always be part of the Greenway parkrun community.

Event number #434
6th June 2026

We had 403 individuals start the weekend at Rooty Hill on a crisp and very cold morning, with today marking the first Saturday of Winter. Despite the chilly start, there was still plenty of energy out on course. Congratulations to the 60 of you who recorded new PB’s.

There was also 25 people who completed their first ever parkrun, and another 38 who visited Rooty Hill for the first time. I hope you enjoyed the event and hope to see you back again soon.

We had milestone celebrations as well with Thomas hitting his 10th event, Damien, Michael and Jennifer checking off 25, Michael finishing number 50, and Joe casually finishing his 350th parkrun. Awesome!

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:
Geoff Newey, Fran Collins, Alex Bulan, Sarah Auzner, Philip Devine, Michelle Donnelly, Yvonne Stretton, Daniel Jones, Annelise Tough, Sodhi Singh, Wayne Thurlow, Richard Sparks, Rafis Garipov, Sofiya Garipova, Michael Spiteri.

Special call out for Sarah and Annelise for their first volunteer stints. A big thank you from everyone at parkrun!

We are always keen for new volunteers. Please check our future roster for opportunities to help (https://www.parkrun.com.au/rootyhill/futureroster/). None of the jobs are too taxing and there is always help available.

My apologies but we had a mix up on the roster today and unfortunately, we don’t have the usual number of photos being published ☹.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Rooty Hill parkrun Results Page (https://www.parkrun.com.au/rootyhill/results/latestresults/ ).

Rooty Hill parkrun started on 10th December 2016. Since then 10,290 participants have completed 84,989 parkruns covering a total distance of 424,945 km, including 12,732 new Personal Bests.
A total of 792 individuals have volunteered 6,746 times. Average number of participants across all events: 196

Have a wonderful long weekend folks. Happy birthday to King Chuck!
