Roma Bush Gardens

Roma Bush Gardens Roma Bush Gardens is a 14 ha recreational reserve with two dams, situated within the town of Roma. Planting, particularly of understorey species, continues.

The Roma Bush Gardens Association was formed at a public meeting in May 1998 to source funds, coordinate and oversee work on the site and liaise with other community groups. It was endorsed as a community Landcare group and has maintained strong links with the Maranoa Landcare and Catchment Association. Individual volunteers and service groups, notably Rotary and Apex, as well as a visiting Green

Corps team, assisted with the earthworks, installation of water pipes, and large scale plantings required to transform the site. Some of the plants were propagated by members or grown from seed collected by members. Bungil Shire Council carted in special soils from appropriate areas for the mulga, bendee and cypress pine zones, and Roma Town Council supplied loam as well as slashing regularly for fire protection. The Rural Fire Brigade provided water trucks and pumps on big planting days. A lengthy drought, problems with salinity in the eastern section of the site and floods in 2010-11 resulted in the death of a significant number of young trees, but the majority of vegetation zones are now well defined and labelled with interpretive signs. Since shire council amalgamation, the Maranoa Regional Council has shown it, too, is strongly supportive of the Bush Gardens. In 2009 it provided a generous grant and in-kind assistance for the completion of the loop path.

Volunteers ran into some bird watches this morning looking out for the Letter–winged Kite. Attached is an image from the Australian Birds app = a great resource for twitchers. It has recently been spotted within a 20 minute radius of the Roma Bush Gardens.
Easily spotted were a visiting pelican, double-barred finches, spiny-cheeked honeyeater, rainbow lorikeets and quite a few species of ducks.

Sharing some photos sent through from one of the garden’s regular users this morning. They “love the new track along the small dam!! It looks great.” Fabulous to see how the efforts of volunteers have made an impact.
Enjoy the way the light changes and the different perspective when walking around the dam. Happy ‘Sun’day.
