Big hART was invited by the Pat family to come to Roebourne (Ieramugadu), in the Pilbara region of Western Australia in 2011. After delivering the much loved Yijala Yala Project, the creation of legacy project New Roebourne is designed to build on this successful community collaboration. Big hART’s program is centred on the young bright future of Roebourne, building on what is strong, developing s

kills and capacity and long-term change. Aboriginal cultural advisors work with Big hART to ensure cultural safety is paramount across all programs.

‘Yijala Yala’ has worked with 28% of the Roebourne population and 80% of the young people aged 7-17 in Roebourne. Our work is inter-generational and intercultural, we work with key elders from key language groups, and support inter-generational culture work which fosters pride, respect and resilience. The remarkable culture and richness of the Roebourne community has seen the community develop with Big hART acclaimed theatre production Hipbone Sticking Out, create award-winning interactive comic Neomad, produce health film initiatives, virtual reality projects, award-winning apps, podcasts, films and the new Tjaabi - Flood Country production and Songs for Peace concert, all set against the backdrop of the stunning ancient landscape of the World Heritage-nominated Murujugu, which houses the largest collection of rock engravings in the world. Big hART’s work focuses on what is strong, working with communities to tell their stories and reimagine their future, and gain the skills – the gift of their story can help drive generational change.

Making sure that you know you are invited and welcome to attend 'Essence' at Ngurin Cultural Centre at 5pm Tuesday 4th August.
Dinner will be provided.

Our coming together is to celebrate a long creative body of work with music, archive gallery, artworks, screenings, Tjaabi, cultural exchange, food, artefacts and conversation.

After many years of working together, Big hART would like to acknowledge the many people who have carried this work, Roebourne’s strong leadership and young people.

We would love you to join us to experience Essence and be part of stewarding this rich creative journey forward.

✨ Announcing Essence — 15 years of art, on Country ✨
For 15 years, the Roebourne community has been creating extraordinary art, theatre, music, film, dance and digital stories — and sharing them with audiences right across the country.

Hipbone Sticking Out, Neomad, Love Punks, Murru, Songs for Freedom, Tjaabi, Gulgawarnigu and Punkaliyarra have taken this work everywhere from the Ngurin Centre and Roebourne Regional to Melbourne Festival, Perth Festival, Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, the Opera House and Barangaroo. One continuous body of work, built over time, by the community and artists creating together on Country.

Now it's time to celebrate. Essence brings it all together — honouring everyone who made it, and passing it on to the next generation.
