You asked someone if they were OK. You meant it. And they… didn't really answer. Maybe they changed the subject, gave you a quick "yeah, all good," or went quiet.

It's easy to walk away thinking you got it wrong, or that they didn't want you to ask. But often, both things are true at once - they loved that you asked, and they're just not ready to talk about it yet.

Opening up can take time. Someone might still be making sense of things themselves, worried about being a 'burden', or simply caught off guard in that moment. None of that means your question didn't land. Sometimes just knowing someone noticed, and cared enough to ask, is what stays with them.

Try not to take their silence personally. Let them know there's no pressure, and that you're still there. Then check in again another day. The door you opened doesn't close just because they weren't ready to walk through it yetπŸ’›

A nationwide phone alert test is coming βš οΈπŸ“±

On Monday 27 July, the Australian Government will test the new national emergency warning system, AusAlert.

The alert will cause compatible devices to vibrate and play a loud warning sound, even if they're on silent or Do Not Disturb. A message will also appear on your device clearly stating that it's a test alert, and no action is required.

If you're supporting a young person, talking about the test beforehand can help them know what to expect.

If receiving the test could disrupt you or cause you or someone you know to feel unsafe, turn compatible devices off or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location and leave them off for at least one hour.

To learn what to expect and when the test is happening in your state or territory, follow the link here: https://www.ausalert.gov.au/alerts-explained/national-test

Sometimes therapy can help us feel better, other times it can bring up some buried memories and vulnerabilities. It's common to feel worse before feeling better. Feeling emotionally exhausted may be what you feel in the short term, but in the long-term you'll have healthier coping skills as well as emotional relief and awareness πŸ™Œ
