Why Rainbow Panda and Tilly?

People often ask why Rainbow Panda has ADHD and why Tilly has Tourette Syndrome.

The answer is simple.

They were created from real life.

Rainbow Panda was given ADHD because ADHD is becoming more widely recognised and understood, yet many children still face challenges every day that others cannot see.

Through my own family, I have watched several of my grandchildren navigate life with ADHD. I have seen their creativity, intelligence, humour and unique ways of thinking. I have also seen their struggles with focus, impulsivity, emotional regulation, school expectations and being misunderstood.

Too often, children with ADHD hear what they are doing wrong instead of being celebrated for everything they do right.

Rainbow Panda was created to help change that.

He shows children that having ADHD does not mean they are broken, naughty or less capable.
It simply means their brains work differently.
And different is not wrong.

Tilly the Twitchy Cat was created to shine a light on a condition that many people have heard of, but few truly understand — Tourette Syndrome.

After experiencing a brain bleed, I developed tics myself. Suddenly, I found myself understanding what it feels like when your body does things you didn't ask it to do. I understood the embarrassment, the frustration, the questions from others, and the feeling of wanting people to look beyond the movement and see the person.

While my experience is not Tourette Syndrome, it helped me appreciate the challenges faced by people who live with tics every day.

Tourette Syndrome is often misunderstood and sometimes even made fun of in popular media.

Tilly was created to change that.

She helps children learn that tics are just one small part of who a person is.
Tilly is creative.
She is funny.
She is brave.
She is kind.
She is talented.

And she just happens to have Tourette Syndrome.

Together, Rainbow Panda and Tilly represent something bigger than any diagnosis.

They represent acceptance.
They represent understanding.
They represent friendship.

Most importantly, they represent the belief that every child deserves to feel seen, heard, valued and included.

Because every child has a story worth telling.

And every story matters.
