It’s World Bicycle Day 🚲

Not all movement needs to look the same. Adding a bike ride into your day is one way to support your health, boost your mood, and build energy. Cycling, walking, swimming, or sport all count.

Mixing up how you move can make it easier to stay consistent and enjoy being active.

You can log activity in minutes on 10,000 Steps, so whether you ride, walk, or do something different, it all contributes to your overall activity.

Finding what you enjoy and do it regularly. 🚶🏽‍♂️🏊🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♂️

Winter can shift routines, but staying active is still achievable. ❄️

Colder weather, shorter days and lower motivation often lead to less movement. The most effective approach is to make activity easier to fit into what you already do, rather than trying to start something new.

Try:
• Linking walking to something you already do, like after meals or before your commute
• Breaking activity into short blocks, even 5 to 10 minutes adds up across the day
• Planning movement earlier in the day when energy and motivation are higher
• Keeping shoes or activewear visible as a prompt to move
• Choosing indoor options when needed, like shopping centres, hallways, or at-home walking

You do not need perfect conditions or long sessions. You just need a plan that works most days.

What is one simple action you can repeat this week? 👟☀️🚶🏼‍♀️

Walk to School Week encourages families to include walking as part of the school day. 🏫🌳

Walking to and from school helps children build regular physical activity into their routine, while also supporting road safety awareness and confidence when done with appropriate supervision. 🚸

Active travel benefits the wider community too. Fewer short car trips can reduce congestion around school gates and help create safer, more supportive school environments. 🚲🚶🏼‍♀️

Even parking further away and walking part of the way, or choosing one or two walking days a week can make a difference.

Movement matters at every stage of life 🚶‍♀️

The 24 Hour Movement Guidelines for Older Adults highlight that health is shaped by how we move, sit and sleep across the whole day. 🕒💤🧘🏼

Regular physical activity, reducing long periods of sitting, building strength and balance, and getting enough good quality sleep can all support independence, confidence and quality of life as we age.

Being active does not have to be expensive.🌳🚲👟

Walking, active play, and everyday movement are affordable ways to move more and feel good. The key is choosing activities that fit your lifestyle and your budget.

If you do extra activities like gardening, playing sports with the kids, or household chores, you can add those minutes to your step log so they count towards your daily total. 🎾⚽

Here's your reminder to find free ways to be active this week.✅

National Heart Week (4–10 May) is Australia’s annual reminder that heart disease remains a leading cause of illness, yet many risk factors can be reduced. ❤️

This year’s theme, Never miss a BEAT, encourages Australians to take simple steps to protect heart health. Regular physical activity, especially walking, plays an important role in supporting heart health. Walking helps manage blood pressure, cholesterol and overall cardiovascular risk, and even short walks across the day can make a real difference. 🚶🏼‍➡️

Heart Week is a great time to understand your personal heart disease risk and take action. Adults aged 45 years and over, or 30 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, can use the Australian CVD Risk Calculator and talk with their GP about the results.

You can also book a Medicare subsidised Heart Health Check with your GP to assess your risk and plan next steps: https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/your-heart/heart-health-check

⏰🚶‍♀️ New: 24‑Hour Movement Guidelines for adults

Health is influenced by what happens across your whole day.

The 24‑Hour Movement Guidelines highlight how movement, sedentary time, and sleep work together to support health and wellbeing. Being active, breaking up long periods of sitting, and getting enough sleep all play a role.

Walking and other everyday activities count towards daily movement, whether they happen at work, at home, or in your community. Small choices made consistently across the day can add up over time.

The focus is on finding a balance that works for your life. Move more, sit less often, and support good‑quality sleep. 💤👟
