This year’s theme, Living Our Truth, recognises the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children growing up strong in who they are — connected to family, culture, community and Country.

At CQID, this is at the heart of everything we do.

Today we celebrate the strength, voices and potential of our children, and we acknowledge the families, kin, carers, Elders, communities and staff who nurture, protect and walk beside them every day.

As an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, we know our children thrive when culture is strong, families are supported and community leads the way.

Our children. Our families. Our culture. Our future.

The Queensland Government has announced its response to the final report of the Commission of Inquiry into Queensland’s Child Safety System, accepting 32 recommendations, accepting 16 in principle, noting two and identifying two for further consideration.

CQID contributed to the Inquiry through three formal submissions, sector consultation and advocacy grounded in our experience, knowledge and work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families, carers and communities.

CQID welcomes reform that strengthens families, increases kinship and family-based care, reduces reliance on residential care and gives Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations a stronger role in decisions impacts our children.

The announcement is an important step, but the detail and implementation will be critical.

CQID will continue advocate, work alongside QATSICPP and the broader community-controlled sector to help inform the reform process. CQID are always willing to engage constructively with all sides of government where it advances the needs and interests of the communities we serve.

Our role is to continue bringing grassroots, community-based experience and advocacy to the table! Ensuring the voices of children, families, carers and community members who may feel unheard are represented in the decisions that affect them.

CHILD SAFETY REFORM: CQID WILL CONTINUE TO BRING COMMUNITY VOICES TO THE TABLE 🖤💛❤️

A DEADLY NEW CHAPTER FOR FAMILY-BASED CARE 🖤💛❤️

CQID is proud to announce that we have been successfully funded to deliver Queensland’s new Family Based Care Services across our funded regions.

Within CQID, these services will be delivered under the name:

Strong Carers, Strong Children

The new Family Based Care model builds on CQID’s longstanding experience supporting kinship and foster carers, while providing greater flexibility to identify family and kin earlier, reduce barriers for potential carers, and provide more tailored support to carers and their households.

This investment will strengthen CQID’s ability to:

🖤 Find and connect with family and kin earlier
💛 Support potential kinship carers through assessment and approval
❤️ Provide practical assistance to help overcome barriers to caring
🖤 Recruit more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander foster carers
💛 Strengthen and sustain safe, culturally connected placements

Most importantly, it will help more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children remain safely connected to family, culture, community and Country.

Over the coming weeks, CQID will be holding community pop-ups, yarning information sessions, morning and afternoon teas, and other local engagement activities across our regions.

These will be relaxed opportunities to meet our team, ask questions and learn more about becoming a kinship or foster carer through Strong Carers, Strong Children.

You do not need to have everything worked out before speaking with us.

Sometimes the first step is simply having a yarn.

A DEADLY SHOUTOUT TO OUR YOUTH WELLBEING TEAM 🖤💛❤️

CQID is proud to recognise the dedication of our Youth Wellbeing team and the positive impact they continue to make alongside young people, families, schools and community partners. A recent message of appreciation from a Queensland Police Service School Support Officer acknowledged the team’s holistic, family-centred and client-focused approach, as well as their strong advocacy and commitment to working collaboratively with schools and other service providers.

The feedback highlighted that young people trust the team and experience their genuine empathy, care and consistency. It also recognised the team’s professionalism, reliability and commitment to following through on what they say they will do.

DEADLY OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE 🖤💛❤️

Queensland Health Deadly Start School-Based Traineeship Program is now accepting Expressions of Interest from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who will be commencing Year 11 in 2027.

This state-wide program gives students the opportunity to begin building a career in health while completing their senior schooling.

Participants may:

✅ Complete a Certificate II in Health Support Services
✅ Progress into a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance
✅ Receive paid, on-the-job training
✅ Access cultural mentoring and ongoing support
✅ Gain practical experience across a range of hospital and health service areas

Experience areas may include administration, allied health assistance, nursing assistance, patient support, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care, cookery, operational services and food services.

Trainees generally complete one paid workday each week, with positions subject to availability across participating Hospital and Health Service locations.

Expressions of Interest are now open for the January 2027 intake.

CQID encourages eligible young people, families, schools and community members to share this opportunity broadly and support interested students to find out more.

ADVOCATING FOR OUR CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

CQID was pleased to recently welcome Corrine McMillan MP - State Member for Mansfield and Shadow Minister for Child Safety, Communities and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, to our Rockhampton office.

The visit provided an important opportunity for our team to share more about CQID’s work across Central Queensland, Fraser Coast and the Wide Bay Burnett Region and to discuss the challenges, priorities and opportunities currently impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, families and communities.

Our discussions highlighted the importance of:

🖤 Aboriginal community-controlled organisations being genuinely involved in the design and delivery of services that impact our people
💛 Strengthening early intervention, prevention and family support before children and families reach crisis point
❤️ Supporting culturally safe responses to domestic and family violence
🖤 Increasing investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, local workforces and community-led solutions
💛 Ensuring the voices, lived experiences and cultural authority of our children, families and communities inform policy and reform

CQID will continue to advocate strongly across all levels of government for systems that recognise the strengths of our families, uphold cultural connection and place decision-making closer to community.
