๐ŸคŽ MABO DAY ๐ŸคŽ

Today, we recognise Mabo Day and honour the life, courage and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose determination helped change the course of Australian history.

The landmark Mabo v Queensland (No 2) decision overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius and recognised the enduring connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their lands, waters and cultures.

Mabo Day is an opportunity to reflect on the strength of First Nations peoples, the importance of truth-telling, and the ongoing journey towards justice, recognition and self-determination.

At CQID, we acknowledge the significance of this day and the generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have advocated for the recognition of their rights, cultures and connection to Country.

Towards the end of Reconciliation Week, we remain committed to walking alongside communities, strengthening culture, supporting self-determination and creating opportunities for future generations.

๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’šWeโ€™re ALL IN for RECONCILIATION ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š

National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together in the spirit of respect, understanding and meaningful action.

This yearโ€™s theme, ALL IN for RECONCILIATION, encourages all of us to stand together and play our part in building stronger relationships, celebrating culture and creating a more united future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

At CQID, reconciliation is reflected through connection, community, cultural respect and walking alongside our mob every day.

Because reconciliation is not just a conversation for one week. It is something we all contribute to through our actions, voices and commitment to each other.

โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’› ๐Ÿ–ค Young Voices Shaping Stronger Futures ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’š

At CQID, we are proud to walk alongside young people who are using their voices, lived experience and culture to create positive change for future generations.

We are incredibly proud to share that two CQID team members have been selected to be part of the 2026 Solid Voices Youth Council (SVYC) led by QATSICPP. The SVYC is an advisory committee that helps ensure services, policies and systems work for our children and young people now and into the future through the voices, experiences and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

In this powerful video, Kadesh shares her story growing up surrounded by the strength of family, culture and community, and how those experiences inspired her passion for supporting others and creating positive impact for her generation and the generation to come.

Her journey is a reminder that with support, belief and connection, young people can create meaningful change within community.

Congratulations Kadesh! Your CQID family is incredibly proud of you and the impact you will make through this important role.

Today we came together as a CQID family to honour the life of Ursula Barber, a proud Iman and Bidjara woman, on the first anniversary of her passing.

Surrounded by colleagues, community and Ursulaโ€™s family, we shared a morning tea and unveiled a memorial plaque in recognition of the lasting impact she made on all of us.

Ursula joined CQID in 2018 and dedicated seven years to walking alongside our families and community. She carried herself with quiet strength, deep integrity and a genuine care for others. Ursula had a powerful presence. She made people feel safe, heard and supported, often without needing to say much at all.

Aunty Heather spoke of Ursula as a strong Iman and Bidjara woman, deeply proud of her culture and her tribe. She shared how much Ursula loved being on Country, and the deep connection and strength she carried whenever she was there.

Her healing nature gave hope to so many, and her light-hearted spirit brought warmth to those around her. Even in her own hardest moments, Ursula remained focused on others, always thinking of her family and those she supported.

Ursula turned her own life experiences into compassion, understanding and healing for others. That is a legacy that cannot be measured, but one that will always be felt.

Todayโ€™s unveiling was more than a moment of remembrance. It was a reflection of the strength, kindness and quiet light Ursula brought into this place and into our lives.

You are remembered. You are missed. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค
