80th ANNIVERSARY
END OF WORLD WAR II
Award-winning commemorative podcast maker Megan Spencer will present a talk on the stories of servicemen and women featured in her podcasts, particularly those from South Australia, highlighting how listening to these narratives is a meaningful way to remember and honour not only those who served, but also the lasting impact on their families and communities.
Megan will highlight the women of the Australian Army Nursing Service who were killed in a war crime on Bangka Island – among them several South Australians, including Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor who lived to share their story. She will also shed light on the lesser-known Beachport Mine Tragedy, where the first two WWII service fatalities on Australian soil, caused directly by enemy action, occurred on one of our neighbouring beaches.
Focusing on the South Australian stories, Megan will also discuss why it is especially important, now, to keep the flame of remembrance alive and at the forefront of our minds, 80 years on.
