FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary

FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary was founded on the 7th of June 2013 and is located on 25 acres in North East Tasmania.

FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary in Tasmania provides a safe lifelong home for animals who have been rescued from cruelty, neglect, exploitation and abandonment, or those that simply have nowhere else to go. We currently have over 120 animals who call FreeHearts home including Cats, Dogs, Horses, Chickens, Pigs, Alpaca’s, Sheep, Cows and Goats amongst others. We will provide these animals with a loving

permanent home where they are free to live in peace and as nature intended. Wherever possible we will adopt suitable Animals to very well screened homes under a legally binding Adoption Agreement. Although we have a strong focus on Animals used in Animal Agriculture we will always try to help any animal in need regardless of species. We have a strict no breeding policy at the sanctuary and promote the desexing of all animals. We rescue and transport injured and orphaned wildlife to a dedicated wildlife carer where the animal will be rehabilitated and re-released wherever possible. Through the sharing of photographs and videos we hope to help people reconnect with ALL animals as unique individuals who are just as full of emotion and the desire to live and enjoy life as we are. My name is Jodie Bradshaw and I am the founder and one of the main caretakers here at FreeHearts. I choose to live a cruelty free lifestyle which means that I do not consume or purchase products, or attend events which resulted in the suffering and/or death of an animal.

As we wind down this page and start a new chapter in our story it is of most importance to us that we say a long overdue THANK YOU to somebody who has been with FreeHearts since very shortly after its inception.

Peter or Pete or ‘Uncle Pete’ moved into the property next door to this one to begin his relaxing retirement…. Or Not 😂

Shortly after moving in he found himself feeling bored as he was not used to having nothing to do, nothing to think about, no problems to solve and it was right about then that we met each other during a chat at the communal letterbox and let’s just say he hasn’t been bored for one moment since that fateful day in late 2011 😂😂😂.

Pete had no experience with Animals to speak of and certainly not farm Animals, but then neither had I so we all learnt ‘on the job’

For the past 13 years Pete has been an absolute rock and an irreplaceable part of making this Sanctuary what it is today.

From mending fences, building shelters, fixing water pipes and working out the never ending problems with the electric fencing to accompanying us on mercy dashes to collect rescue Animals, emergency trips to the vet, he’s pretty much done it all.

He generally doesn’t like to be in videos etc and we have asked permission to share these funny moments which are mostly from the early days of the Sanctuary so please enjoy a few minutes of Pete being Pete and helping us make the world a better place for Animals.

Happy 10th birthday to our gorgeous lad Fergus! 🥳❤️

Fergus was born on a farm after the farmer refused to desex the mum, and then decided he would get rid of the unwanted pups by shooting them 😡 Fortunately all the little ones were rescued just in time and Fergus found his way into our hearts and became a FreeHearts dog ❤️

He struggles with anxiety sometimes but he’s a happy boy who loves his best friend Ruby, his food and his big fluffy bed where he spends much of his time, especially in his senior years 😊

Thank you so much to Bernie who has been Fergus’s loyal Guardian Angel for 7 of his 10 years on earth 🙏❤️

We love you ‘PergaBerga’ ❤️

Rest in peace our beautiful, fabulous elderly lady Gloria ❤️

Gloria was rescued in 2023 in a group of older hens who were being disposed of as they no longer lay many eggs. They all came to FreeHearts together where they have been having the time of their lives- safe, free and very loved.

Gloria was a gorgeous, quirky girl who roosted every night in the hen house next to her best friend Gaynor. Due to their age, both ladies struggled a little to jump from their perch in the morning, so we would gently lift them down and they would indignantly fluff their feathers and waddle out to start their day.

We will miss her 💔

The little Pademelon boy continued to recover slowly over the week after his initial rescue gaining back feeling and use of his right leg followed by slower recovery of the more affected left leg and tail.

We were in contact with several Wildlife Carers throughout his time here and on Thursday our friends Claire and Ansie transported him to Meander & Tamar Valley Wildlife Care and Rescue where the plan is for him to have his left leg splinted in order to assist with the last stage of healing for the leg.

* JUST TO CLARIFY - Meander & Tamar Valley Wildlife Care and Rescue were not involved in this Boys initial Careplan - we made contact with them just prior to him being transported out there 😊

Thank You to everyone who kept him in their thoughts and prayers, he is a little fighter ❤️

Team Work makes the Dream Work ❤️

Again this year we would like to give a huge THANK YOU 🥰 to Paul Barrett ( and to Bethany for supporting him by babysitting their new rescue fur baby Bob ❤️ )

Paul and Bethany hired a truck and then Paul did 2 Back to back trips to collect 160 bales of hay and helped us stack them in the Barn / sheds.

Due to the distance covered this took most of the day.

We are so grateful to have such an amazing group of people who go above and beyond to support us in running the Sanctuary ❤️

Thank You to our Gold Star Voluteer Karen, my niece Paige, and our neighbour Louie who pitched in and helped unload and stack the bales, it’s a hard messy job !

❤️❤️❤️

Can you be Queenie’s Guardian Angel?

We are looking for sponsors for our beloved Queenie ❤️ As many of you will know, we rescued this beautiful girl 5 months ago from a terrible existence where she had no access to food, appropriate care or horse friends. She was severely compromised, worn down by life and understandably mistrusting of humans.

Over the weeks we slowly and carefully brought her back to health and introduced her to our gentle old boy Arden who is now her bonded paddock mate. During that time she has also learnt it’s OK to trust again and today she is the glowing picture of health and vitality.

As a Guardian Angel you will be directly contributing towards Queenie’s care (food, dentals, hoof trimming, vet bills etc). In return you will receive a certificate, a special Guardian Angel mug, a set of FreeHearts bookmarks, personal updates every 6 months, and after your first year of being a Guardian Angel your name will go onto a plaque in the main FreeHearts barn. You are also most welcome to come and meet Queenie in person by arrangement.

The commitment from you is $25 a month.

If you think you’d like to take an active role in Queenie’s care, please set up your direct debit via bank transfer (to FreeHearts Animal Sanctuary ANZ BSB 017-537 account 3843 39934) or PayPal using our email address [email protected] or click this link to take you direct to the FreeHearts page. (You can click the box to make it a monthly donation).

Please then direct message us or email with your name and postal address.

Thank you so much from us and Queenie 🙏❤️

EDIT- We would just like to clarify a few points:

FreeHearts has been operating for over 12 years. Prior to that, Jodie- who founded and runs the sanctuary- worked as a vet nurse. In the years we have been operating we have helped with the rescue of a great deal of native wildlife. We ALWAYS consult with our highly experienced and respected wildlife carer (registered for 24 years) and 100% follow her instructions as to the best care for the animal. If a vet is required then we take the animal to the vet for consultation.

In the case of this pademelon, he has been fully examined by the vet. Our wildlife carer advised us to keep him where he is and monitor him for 48 hours which is what we are doing. (We do not normally keep wildlife here)

The only reason we put the post up in the first place was to raise awareness of the plight of our native wildlife who are so frequently injured or killed on our roads.

As with any posts we put on Facebook, if you have a genuine concern or have any helpful suggestions which come from a place of qualified knowledge and experience, we would appreciate it if you send us a private message rather than write inflammatory comments on the post. If you are abusive we will block you from commenting.

Please be respectful.

Thank you. 🙏

Once this little guy was over his shock and feeling a bit better he started wanting to move around the enclosure but although he can stand up and support himself the messages aren’t getting through clearly from his brain to his legs when it comes to moving them.

As this was a new development we took him in to see our vets, as we knew it would be the trip was extremely stressful for him 🙁

He was sedated and examined.
There is no obvious reason as to why his legs aren’t working properly but putting all of the symptoms and the timeline together the most likely cause is nerve damage.

Our job is to keep him safe, quiet and to give him time.

The next big milestone we really needed him to pass was to start eating which he has done this afternoon.

*PLEASE NOTE - We do NOT promote any unnecessary handling of Wildlife.

When I removed him from the carrier he was unsteady on his feet so I used my hand to stabilise him ( then I got tired so lay down 😂 ) He was calm and quiet and started nibbling on grass and after a couple of minutes he moved away and we left him in peace.

Last night we found this poor boy left to die by the side of the road.
He was stunned, bleeding and making a terrible, haunting sound as he writhed in pain.

He cried out like a baby wallaby does when they are distressed and trying to find their mother even though he is an adult 😔

The noise continued as I gently picked him up and put him into the car.
We expected him to die overnight but he hasn’t, and this morning Karen was able to give him a pain relief injection as I moved him to a secure yard.
He is a wild animal so we are trying to limit his distress by leaving him be and monitoring him from a distance.
If we hadn’t found him he would still be sitting there in a pile of his own blood most likely being eaten alive.
If you hit an animal or see one in trouble please don’t drive by and leave them there ! Please keep him in your prayers and send him healing x
